Let my clarify.
With the 1DX, if you select the AF points to be red, they'll be black while the camera searches for something to focus on, briefly flash in red when focus is acquired, then remain black until the camera times out.
With the 1DX Mark II; they'll be red when the camera searches for something to focus on, briefly flash brighter red when focus is acquired and then remain red for the rest of the time.

The 1DX behaves the same as the 7D whilst in One Shot AF. In Servo AF, the 1DX can aid in making the AF points visible in low light, by flashing them in red occasionally. In the 7D, they remain black. They were identical to begin with, though. The Servo AF illumination in the 1DX was added as a firmware update, on popular demand.

Now I don't know how the 7D Mark II works, as I don't have any, but if you can set them to be red, it's not the same as the 1DX Mark II, as that camera will never let them be anything but illuminated in red. The on/off/auto setting in the 1DX is replaced by a bright/brighter setting in the successor. There's no off.

EDIT: I got curious and checked in a user's manual for the 7D Mark II.

  • The AF Point illumination in the 7D works as with the original firmware for the 1DX.
  • The AF Point illumination in the 7D Mark II works as with the last firmware for the 1DX.
  • None of the two behaves like the 1DX Mark II.

Now I sincerely hope I've been able to re-instate Ah-keong's desire for new gear! ;-)a

Anders

Ah-keong...You can make the 7DII squares red, just like the 1DX2. I've made them red with my 7DII, but I like them better black.

I'm sending you a link (see below) to show you how to make your squares red. Read and follow the instructions carefully, and you will find that you can easily make your camera change the focusing squares to red. Give it a try.

Thanks Lame-Duck,
Sorry, I did not make myself clear. I meant that I prefer the 1DX2 AF squares which are red all the time an not the 1DX or 7D2 which are either black or flashing red.

I tried your method before and still prefer the 1DX2 AF red squares.

Hope Canon put it in "7D3" :p

Yes yes! That's what I hope Canon would put in the "7D3".

Meanwhile I am saving up for 1DX mark II for Olympics 2020 :p

Sorry I misunderstood, Ah-keong. I don't like the flashing red either...I just use the black squares all the time. I understand why you want the 1DXII. Like I mentioned before, I too am saving up for the 1DXII, if the 7DIII doesn't have the features I want for shooting birds, I think I'll wait until the end of this year before making up my mind.

After lots of research and asking fellow members about their thoughts on the camera I've decided on the 1DXII as well, I will buy one when I go back home to the UK in December...happy days.

Had a strange thing happen, picked up my camera and was messing with some video, was using the touch screen and noticed the bottom left of the rear lcd screen was pushing in fractionally. Never noticed this before (anyone else do this? ) so sent it off to Canon for a service, sensor clean and also told them about the rear screen. I have CPS so it went away on Wednesday, they emailed me receipt of arrival on Thursday, gave me a quote of £143 ($187) and have already posted it back to me to arrive Monday, Love CPS. Cant wait to see what the service report shows as they didn't mention what it needed. Maybe it's fine.

Yeah I thought it was different. Looking forward to seeing if they repaired it and told me what was wrong with it.
