Great pic. Never heard of the Little Wattlebird though. Doesn't look much like its cousins, does it?

Also, the OOF background is a lot more pleasing than the photos I got earlier this week with the same lens, using the same aperture. As Archibald said, the ugly bokeh that this lens sometimes produces seems to happen when there are straight(ish) lines included. Some more research required ...

Wouldn't say they differ too much from the Red Wattlebird, both of which are very common around my neck of the woods. Not sure if you had a different cousin in mind?

Here is a Sparrow that I tend to overlook when out shooting. They actually are very striking birds.

That is very nice Rob.
Agree, they are striking. I tended to ignore their beauty being they were such pests here.

That one is very colourfully marked.

They're one of our prettiest birds IMO. With a note to go with them.

However, it is an example of the weird OOF effect/artefacts that I'm starting to dislike about the EF100-400L II, and I say that as a new owner of that lens myself. I took some bird shots with it earlier this week and I was really bothered by the horrible (to me) OOF effects. It might depend on the nature of the background because, like your shot above, mine comprised mostly foliage. Other shots taken with that lens on this forum, with less detailed/complex backgrounds, are fine.

Is it just me?

Thank you. The background blur may be due to the wire netting behind the bird. Also, mine is the Version I of this lens. I’m thinking of upgrading to Version II.

This poor bird came into my workshop when I had the window open and couldn't find his way out.
I felt bad to see the poor thing flapping about.
I was able to catch him safely and let him free.

Not all Sparrows are created equal The House Sparrows are the invasive pests, garbage birds; the Song Sparrow that Rob posted is a good bird to have around, not considered a pest. Other "good sparrows" that I see a lot are Chipping variety:
