Pondrader's comments about focusing in gloomy conditions scared me a bit. I know, he was talking wildlife and I shoot mostly landscape these days. Most of my shooting is in overcast or after sundown. When water is involved I am usually using a 10-stop and CPL to get 30 second shutter speeds at ISO 100 and f/11. The 80D can focus with the filters attached in live view so I expected the EOR R would too.

The EOS R focused with the filters attached in dark shade so it should be just fine. It was 30 second shutter speeds at ISO 1600 and f/10 so that was almost four stops darker than my normal 10-stop shooting conditions. Normally I would have used the 6-stop but for testing sake...

Hopefully I can get out and shoot some this weekend.

I've had one day that wasn't raining... Drove around today in the rain but nothing likes to stand around in the rain..

I think I dont know what to think at the moment. the fine focus is not what im use to. centre points are enormous compared to what im use to

My problem with 50mm L lenses, be they R or otherwise, is that I can get a 50mm f/1.8 with S.T.M. AF for $90.00 :)

I used to have one years ago. But once I saw what the images are like from the 50L and the 85L, I would never go back to the nifty fifty or 85mm 1.8.

But I do carry the nifty fifty as a spare. It's still a very good lens. Proportionately, I found the the budget lenses like that, and the L lenses, seem to hold their value very good.

probably not the best place to ask but since you mentioned the 50 stm, do you have any idea of what its like. I had a 50 F1.2L and sold it when times were tough and now Im regretting it. thinking of just buying the cheap version

Jeff, you may not have been happy with this camera's AF in the field, but the images you posted above look very good. Time and again I see a remarkable sharpness and clarity in the images taken with the EOS R. And those shots at 12.800 ISO, I can see no noise.

First outing with new camera and 400 DO ii with 1.4 tc ii AND 2.0 TC iii. I first tried using AF tracking mode and was not happy with the results. it seemed slow to lock on target. I switched to Large Horizontal Zone and was pleased with overall results. Both images are heavily cropped

It fixed everything I disliked about the older Nifty Fifty, ie: Auto focus. The STM AF is pretty peppy, and dead accurate. The IQ of the nifty was never really in question, it was just always hard to get anything in focus. Manual focus was also no good. Subject isolation is still amazing open @ f/1.8, bokeh not as good of course vs. the L, but Vs. the older Nifty, the STM has 7 blades instead of 5, offering nearly round specular highlights.

You'll still get light fall off, and soft corners, and c.a., but to me that's just fine, and you save a lot of $K giving up that edge to edge sharpness. Still plenty sharp in the center. Vs. the older nifty, all of these aspects have been improved. With profile correction sin RAW converters, one can tame the light fall off and c.a. very nicely.

With the new accurate STM AF, I like it more than the treble priced 50mm f/1.4 with it's not very good "semi usm"

First one looks like it got good sharp focus on the closer duck, the second one I can't see anywhere that is particularly sharp.

Its all depends what your doing with the camera, It loves a little bit of colour or a glint of light and exposed so so well.

I would call it a fantastic urban landscape camera with the best 1080p video I have ever seen in a camera. It is super in low light, just super.

and the iso is way better than any camera I have ever had..

Incredible detail at incredible distance. I know you've seen this one.. but here it is bigger on flickr

Thanks, think I will buy it, I dont care so much about the corners being not so sharp as long as center is sharp :-)

Went to Kenmore Camera’s annual “Expo” today. One of the speakers was Peter Lee from Canon and he gave a presentation on the new EOS R and RF lens system. Had slides explaining the advantages offered with the new mount and the physics involved in acheiving those advantages and how lens construction has changed with the new mount.

I found it informative and am really looking forward to Wednesday when my R kit w/the 24-105mm RF lens arrives.

Was able to then play with a R with the 24-105mm RF lens and loved the size/weight. AF seemed pretty quick going near to far and back across the show floor. I ordered the camera after only briefly fondling one a couple weeks ago and based on reviews and the threads here. To be honest, I was a little worried about ending up with buyers remorse but after spending a little more time with one today I am eagerly awaiting the delivery and feel better about deciding to be an early adopter.

They had several R’s in stock and I almost jumped on a Control Ring adapter, but my kit is coming with the standard adapter so I will hold off on that for now.

I currently have a 5D IV, 80D, and EOS M5. I am pretty sure my M5 is going to be going up for sale. As much as I loved the idea of a compact interchangeable lens camera for travel, I just never really warmed to it in part due to the limited availability of fast lenses for it along with it being almost too small. The R is a much more comfortable fit/feel in my hand even if it is noticeably larger.

The real question is whether to add the R to my collection or have it replace something. I use my 5D mostly for my real estate work and if the R is truly comparable with the 5D IV as many say, I may let the 5D go as there would be a lot of overlap. It has served me well for nearly 2 years and more than paid for itself.

My initial thought is to keep the 80D for that extra reach when trying to shoot wildlife. Frame rate equals the 5D, and you get the bonus of the crop for more pixels on target. Then again, Mr. Lee confirmed the R will AF at f/11 so the 100-400mm with a 2x TC puts you at 800mm on 30mp FF vs 896mm equivalent w/1.4x TC on 24mp crop.

That takes most of the crop benefit away. Of course the question then becomes one of frame rate on burst. Mr Lee suggested that many of the noted concerns of the R would be resolved with firmware upgrades, though he didn’t go into any specifics.

Anyway, Wednesday can’t come soon enough!

If you can put all the negative reviews and see the camera for what it is your experience will be 100% better.. Most of the comparing of features is bogus in real life..

If I could have two expensive cameras this EOSR would be one of them. Once you use the R I think the decision will be clear..
