One from today....Pt Wilson Black Shouldered Kite

Very lucky to get some blue sky out of the cloud today otherwise it would have been so so capture as there is nothing worse than white/grey sky to spoil a bird image . I waited a hour for this guy to look at me and he did for a couple of seconds at same time as the clouds parted for a bit of blue sky...Very lucky on this one as the rest of the day was grey sky throughout.

Very, very lovely, Clipper. Superb. We have tried several times, both in France and Spain, for the Black-winged Kite, but only seen them as distant specks, so I am very envious.<sigh>

Edit : You should add this one to your gallery, you know...

Thanks for your comment.......Better come to Australia then and visit Pt Wilson :)...There are a few of them around there and they love dead branches with very little foliage that help give a good image capture if one can get close enough . They are also fairly good to get up on at this place I go although anything less then about 10 meters is pushing the boundaries with them ....I was about 12 -15 meters from this guy today although I started off at 20 meters and edged forward slowly a meter every couple of mins or so until I had him eyeing me regularly and I knew any closer and he would take off. And he was fine then for quite a while until another group of photographers came up to the tree the kite was in but approaching too fast and that was enough for the Kite to take off.

Cheers

400DO II + 1.4x. Pushing the 1dx Mark II file, good size crop but held up fairly well.

From this morning, first time out in over a month. This guy is a local charm boy, I think he is paid by the wetlands staff to sit on the rail and pose for pictures. A bird that obviously was born at the wetlands around hundreds of people constantly and has no fear.

I have also found that about 10 metres seems to be the comfort zone of birds I have tried to approach, with some few exceptions. I do the same as you do : start clicking to at least get something then slowly move forward, stop, click, move and so on. I've even pretended to be a sheep, down on hands and knees, baa-ing - but that was when I could still get up again! The bird wasn't fooled, BTW.

Nice ones! The Red Bellied and Yellow Rumped are challenging birds to get close to, good work there! Send the Pine Siskin my way please?

Thank you MatthewK. Lots of people in Vermont reporting very large numbers of Pine Siskin this fall, so maybe they will continue their journey south.
