In the UK, the word buzzard denotes to the genus Buteo. This is the same genus as many of our soaring hawks, such as our commonly seen red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis). A buzzard is not a vulture, but rather a hawk, the most commonly seen European hawk. In America, we've frequently adopted the term buzzard as the same thing as a vulture. It is not an accurate term.
