I looked at the CV21 threads/images/reviews a lot. Looks like a great lens and the combination of IQ & size nearly won me over. In the end, though, I like what I've seen from the D 21 more and felt that it might bother me if I went with the CV21 and wasn't *totally* in love.

D21 =known goodness.

CV21 = early adopters risk

I'll gladly take the risk for the size advantage, and it does seem very respectable with my initial impression. Maybe not fully Zeiss, but pretty nice wide open. Can't wait to put it through its paces, a pleasure to use and pack, images feel very high quality so far.

You should try the CV lenses, the 35 F1.7 Ultron is very Zeiss like.

Yeah, CV has been on the radar since the 35/1.7. The 40/1.2 will be a contender, though I've always had a yearning for Distagon 35/1.4. Really like what I'm seeing out of the 65 APO. too (then again, that Macro Planar 100/2, *sigh*).

I hear what you are saying, I've owned a fair amount of CV lenses and still do, these little gems are amazing even when compared to the likes of the Zeiss fullframe lenses, I love the overall build quality and output especially on the wide end. I shot the VC 15 for a couple of years and really appreciated how small that lens was compared to the Zeiss 15 ZE with compareable IQ.
The CV 21 is really tiny though and would make a great travel lanscape lens.

Macro planar has got to be one of the top portrait lenses of all time, one of the few lenses that I occasionally pine for, flaw and all.

Worked so well on the Sony

700g or so with the adapter killed it for me. Sony 85 just as sharp, but doesn't have the nice clean Zeiss look. Size difference was too much, half the weight.

If you're ok with the weight, damn amazing IMO. Would get it over the 65, for the focal length. Nikon 105 f2.5, also a total sleeper, really good rendition, but no macro.

I've been following the CV 40 1.2 thread over at Fred Miranda, it a really fine lens and I like the rendering of that lens, the focal length doesn't fit my style however. The Zeiss Distagon 35 has become my go to daily use lens, it's not perfect on Sony bodies if you are expecting shear corner to corner sharpness shot wide open, it's super expensive but the IQ and build quality is really great it's up there with Leica M rangefineder lenses, it's a lens I will never sell. I've added a PCX filter and that really improves the corner sharpness to the point that it is non-issue.

Some time ago...If you are wondering what that structure is, it's a pigeon coop used in the extreme north-eastern area of Portugal, right on the border of Portugal and Spain. The locals use to raise wide rock pigeons which were an important sorce of protein back in the day.

There are no bad decisions there--just different ones.

I'm still going back and forth. Both lenses seem so tempting and a good option....

Very interesting Jose. There is a dovecote on the Van Mansion property that was built around 1583 by Thomas Lewis. Like the pigeon coop, it housed doves used for the same reasons. The Van dovecote contains over a 1,000 stone nesting boxes.

This link shows Van Mansion as well as the exterior and interior views of the dovecote with its stone nesting boxes.

the only good thing i did out of the situation. It might be a bit insensitive for the victims but the owner called me to shoot so it's not my fault.

The air in Chico is not safe at all. Healthy air is 0-50. Normal hazard charts only go up to between 150-300 as unhealthy and dangerous to breathe. In Chico right now, it is 831!! We need to leave for awhile.

I got about halfway around the block with the new Distagon 21 before my hands got too cold - I need some warmer thin gloves.
