Polishing the bike was probably the toughest preparation for that shot!

Big fires are scary. I know what you are feeling. Big fire here in 2013.

Be safe.

I've looked through several pages of images, but haven't seen a discussion on controlling the noise at higher ISOs. I'm using this with a 300 2.8 for swim meets. Lighting in the venue is poor, to put it mildly. I've found general settings to be manual at 2.8, 1/800, +2/3 with auto ISO - and the ISO is ranging from 10k to 20k. I've considered dropping the EC, but I'd end up pushing the file in post.

I've tried the NR is LR, but it's not working well enough for my liking. Anybody got another suggestion or any thoughts on another way to approach this?

There are various better tools - from Topaz DeNoise to Nik Dfine.

Depending on what you've got in the frame you may also see some benefit to increasing the noise reduction in areas that lack detail (e.g. smooth water or out of focus zones), as the noise tends to be more noticeable there. Photoshop will allow you to create masks to hit only areas with low frequency detail.

One other suggestion if you're taking very fast bursts of frames might be something like Kandao Raw. I've not used it myself, but it takes a number of similar raw images and uses the information to produce a single image with reduced noise. They claim it works much better with moving objects than blending in Photoshop.

You may also want to get in contact with forum member TeamSpeed, as he's got a lot of experience with noise reduction on high ISO images.

Unfortunately if it's an indoor event there's a decent chance the lighting may be "funky" - e.g. fluorescent tubes, or something else that's lacking parts of the full spectrum of light. That always makes life harder than just having low light levels.

Camera, some lenses, too little time, too little talent

Not sure what to do... got this BNIB as part of a trade deal, and I'm supposed to flip it because I already am happy with my 5D4/80D (and my daughter needs to go to college someday), but.... it's in front of me right here, right now, why not just open it up and keep it?

I can't keep it, unfortunately. My rational side won this time :-( I think my next camera purchase will be when Canon releases the right pro-mirrorless body in the future.

Someone's going to get a great deal on this baby!
