Richea pandanifolia
these are a native to Tasmania
Richea pandanifolia is a tall palm-like species which grows from 2 to 12 metres high. It usually grows on a single stem but may be occasionally branched. It has tapering leaves which may be 0.3 to 1.5 metres long and, like all richeas, they have "sheathing" bases...ie, the base of the leaf wraps completely around the stem. The leaves are densely crowded towards the top of the trunk.

I've seen pictures of "Pandanus" from Tasmania and thought it odd that such a typically tropical genus would grow there. I'm now guessing these are what I've seen pictures of.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

yes would be. (Correction.) Pandani is its 'common name' . Not related to pandanus. But some call it that here.
I meant to say they are mountainous growing plants.
You don't find them at coastal elevations.
They form 'forests' in some places and they harbour leeches that discharge themselves onto you when you brush them.
Also when the wind blows they rustle and its a very distinct sound as they are hard leaves.
Also have unique flowers.

Anyone that has been to Cradle Mountain area (Waldheim) would know them as they are abundant around there.
I'll dig out a photo of them later.
