Phil, forgot to mention we'll be zipping through Amarillo in about 5 days on the way to
Carrizozo NM :)

I due hope for you AND the Mrs. you lens comes this week.
You already have the 300PF so you know what to expect.

I'm using a collapsible rubber hood on the 500PF, one that takes screw in filters into which
I've placed a B+W UV....need to clean that before the trip.

Too bad Amarillo is close to a 6hr drive from Dallas. Otherwise, we'd run up for lunch, dinner, or coffee as ya'll pass through.

Hope you see plenty of cranes & much other great wildlife, not to mention some really pretty countryside in NM!

Have a fun & safe trip!

I'm not hoping for Cranes. We get 3000-5000 about 2 hours from home here.
I'm hoping for a Harrier. Poof, the better-half, got one in Florida. I did not :(
e-bird shows 6 there over the last several days and they are known to be at Bosque in November.
Yep, already have all the Crane shots I'll ever need and will shoot them if nothing else, but any raptor would
be great, any owl would be the zugspitze.
would be ever so nice.
I'm still missing several hundred species-

Heading out tomorrow myself.
Here's my last one via the 500PF for a while.

Hey Jake, if you read this, ask the programmer to add the 500PF to the database :)

Never shot Nikon before but was so excited for this lens I ordered it from Adorama and picked up a D500. Crazy to think I have three systems now. To hold me over and learn Nikon I got a 200-500. Are there any rummors or speculation about when the 500 will ship next?

You're in for a treat!

I am holding out hope that mine will be available for pickup tomorrow. That's my current "target date". There's been pretty big demand for them. One local store receive 8 500PF's at release and sold them almost immediately. Now they are trickling in.

If you haven't already, look up Steve Perry and Mark Smith on youtube. They both have some EXCELLENT videos on the D500 & 200-500.. Steve has some the 500PF as well.

I'm still acclimating, but I'm happy to help if I can.

To think, many years ago Canon had the very successful 400mm f5.6. They could have build on the popularity of that lens with the development of a 500mm f5.6 DO.

But,... they didnt even update the 400mm f5.6.

BTW does anyone know why the third party lens manufacturers dont build DO lenses? They could license the DO tech.

I don't think "DO" needs to be licensed, it's an old tech (Fresnel) used all the way back for lighthouses.

They did update the 400 5.6. They included 100 - 399mm in the design. The zoom equals or surpasses the prime in every aspect except weight.
The only people that know why third parties are not making DO lenses don't talk about it on public forums.
Unless other alternatives to the Nikon 500 5.6 PF are released, I will buy one in the future. At today's pricing adding a Nikon D500 to the 500 PF is about the same price as a Canon 400 DO II. I usually have 2 Canon bodies but the 500 PF is attractive enough to make adapting to 2 systems worthwhile.
