Some years ago we went on a fungi foray with an expert mycologist and found Amethyst Deceivers. I fried them up with butter and served them with an omelette. They didn't lose their colour, so looked very pretty with the yellow. They were also very tasty, but I certainly wouldn't try them again without an expert ID as there are other mushrooms similar but definitely not for eating.

Found this monster of what I believe is a fungus, this fall at my son's house. It apparently does not mind hot, sandy, dry soil. It looks a little like something an elephant may leave behind, but no elephants in this neighborhood.:-)

Any idea as to what they may be?

I have no idea, and have been puzzled by them. They are ugly, for sure. I once cut one in half and took some macro pics of it.

This was the first one I have ever seen in North Idaho. I always associated a fungus type with a shady and higher moisture content environment. I'll see if it shows up again next year and try to sample it for an identification. It has peaked my interest.:-)
