Yes, I agree that 5.6 makes for a different look, usually not a better look. I shot with a 100-400 this year. The bigger dof was not a benefit but on the other hand no monopod and being able to zoom made for some photos I couldn't get with my 400/2.8. Everything is a compromise.

My goal is to have the 100-400mm by next football season. It will allow me to sell the 400mm to help pay for it. A zoom makes life so much easier. I try to shoot from the back of the end zone with this lens to help simplify the background. If I had the $$$ for the F/2.8, I would probably get the 200-400mm instead. I got to use it for a PGA event and fell in love with it.

Season came to an end Friday night. Lost 28-0. A couple teams still alive in our area, so I may get to shoot a couple more games if they can win this week.

Nice action. I think the 400mm F/5.6 is an underrated lens, at least for day games. I think it's under appreciated because it can make for a busy background vs the F/2.8.

I have a 400 f/5.6 that I used for birding and it was tack sharp with a very quick auto focus. I love my 400 f/4 DO now, though. The bokeh is much better even though it's not as smooth as your typical L lens. I use it for day football and birding with a 1.4x III. It's awesome on a kayak for birds.

Burnet44 - These are great shots.... just be really careful of over sharpening. You've got lots of sharpening artifacts in these. Otherwise they look great.

No the CC is always welcome, as i'm farrrrrrr from a pro. Just adding a photo. It's just a quick shot of my kid. Nothing special. I knew it wasn't the best shot but it was before he caught the ball for a TD. If it's the wrong place apologies. As you see I've been here years and don't post much. I will try that this weekend (settings) Thanks!!!

I have been here for a while now, i don't lurk i just don't post alot. I have 2eyes 2ears and 1 mouth. My eyes and ears outweigh my mouth in life. Its just me... **C&C is ALWAYS welcome. I come here to lurk to learn. I appreciate it**
