I was really torn. I do wholeheartedly believe that the RF system will be a success and that it truly represents Canon's interchangeable lens future. I think I just need to wait for the right RF system body, for me, to come out. Until then I can't imagine a better camera to shoot with than the 5D4.

As an aside I do a lot of trekking in the mountains with the 5D4 carried on a bracket on my backpack strap. I have no concerns about the 5D4 and, say, the 16-35/4L IS (with a lens coat) taking whatever the conditions throw their way: bumps, rain, dust. I would be worried about this initial R body. It's not as weather sealed and doesn't seem as stout. So that's another big reason for me to wait for a pro body.

Finally, I did keep the control ring adapter. So I'm hopeful for that pro body!

Cheers.

A point on construction and weather sealing... I don't think we have to worry as they are built primarily the same as the other EOS body's

Quite good I think.

Let me guess? Peak Design Capture? I love those mine. I'm actually overstocked and have a couple on the BST. As for the camera I much prefer hearing it from a guy who has actually used the camera vs some hater sitting in front of a list of specs. At the end of the day you have to use what gets you the shot. No shame in that.

Question for those who have actually used the EOS R extensively: how does the EVF compare to those on the Sony A7R series cameras?

I rented a Sony A7R2 for two weeks last fall, did some extensive shooting around my place and in Shenandoah comparing the Sony to my 7D2 at base ISO (did not have an 80D at the time). While I loved the 42MP sensor at base ISO, I hated the ergonomics of the camera (size, button layouts, battery performance) and especially disliked the EVF, it negatively affected my vision if used too much. I found it nearly impossible to have confidence in focus looking at the EVF.

The EVF is my single biggest question about any of these MILC bodies; IMO they need to get to 6MP in order to not appear 'cooked' (without defining that term) compared to an OVF.

Cotton Carrier. I tried the PD but it lets the camera lens rub against my torso. The Cotton Carrier isn’t as pretty but it holds the camera/lens combo with great stability.

The RF system is going to be amazing. But yeah, right now the 5D4 just works better for me. I’m eagerly anticipating the R Pro.

I do find the R a bit small specially with all my other DSLRs having grips. It it just a tad bigger then my 550d without its grip and a significantly smaller and shorter than both my 5d2 and 5d3 due to all the missing 5 buttons on the left side. I am still waiting for a price drop on the Rs grip or a 3rd party version. There is an unbalanced feeling when I use my larger ef lenses on it kinda like it did on my 550d (t2i) until I got a grip for it. I can't imagine the balance feel of to the R paired with the keg sized 28-70 RF but yes i do agree that this camera has more of a Rebel T and Ti Series feel to it then the larger 5D Series i own..

I owned an a7rII for a while and have only 1 day of use with the R under my belt my opinion is that the EVF on the R is superior and not just by a little. The same can be said for the LCD. When it comes to something like an EVF though I think you really have to try it for yourself.

Russ I have shot the a7rIII and the a9.. my buddy has both, I have carried it for a few days at a time and the camera is super as the world knows, but it has its own draw backs.. EVF in the sony I have a hard time telling just where my focus is laying.. it is not as clean and clear as the EOS R.. The R is as close to a Dsl as I have ever seen and I think people in general feel the R is the clear winner at this point.

Shooting the R I forget I'm looking at a EVF... yes there is a black out that takes getting use to right now but so does the a7rIII, I didn't mind in both camera's

But the advantage of seeing your changes is very good.... I set the camera to not preview because I've seen what I shot as I took it and I don't feel the need to chimp all the time... that part I love.

I guess the answer is it looks almost life like on the R.. Not so on the Sony... but I would really like some of the parts of the AF of the Sony...

I'm in the Canon camp because I'm not throwing my Canon glass out the window just yet.

Yeah, I saw those images. But I believe the 5D4 is more rugged and has more extensive sealing. The R is on par with the 6D in terms of sealing and build is what I’ve read. Having now handled the R and the 5D4 my gut says the 5D4 is a bit stouter and can handle just about anything. I think I’d be inclined to coddle the R a bit. The Pyrénées is a tough envirment for camera gear.

In all my days of photography I have never had a camera fail the water, snow, and freezing cold... I have frozen them to the point they will not turn on..

All day at -40c will do that some days lol. I shoot in the worst of conditions and I have no fear this camera is about as water tight as one gets..

In any event we will find out... I know for a fact the Buttons will be the death of it anyway not the weather sealing.. Yes those darn buttons lol

One thing also... The one card thing... How many guys actually write to two cards at the same time ????

I have never... I do carry a card in each slot, but never do I write to both at the same time... Just never have since the digital camera was invented...

Of course My mother never made me wear two life jackets either... so it comes down to breeding I guess.. lol :p

OT: Screw the Supreme Court.

B & H charging sales tax in WA state NOW. (I know it's old news but yeah big bummer)

It was a nice run for those out of state places and they made out like bandits for years but the party is over. Although I have to say that B & H's return policy is still miles ahead of any local camera store. 30 days, no questions asked. One place here has a 14 day return policy and no more than 200 clicks on the body. lolno

Gotta say, I do use both cards on occasion, especially if I'm going to be away from home for a stretch of time: RAW to one card and large fine JPEGs to the other.

Brilliant :-)

Just curious. Do these have sensors to say when a card fails, or you just trust pot luck and watch the results later?
Never thought about it until reading through this thread.

Look forward to more of yours in coming months.
