Did anybody upgrade? Can they comment on it? Is it worth it? How much pain is it?
I upgraded to 12 yesterday after having tried the beta for a few days.
The new v12 refines the interface and I find it much more visually pleasing and it reduces distracting visual elements from previous versions.
I shoot with a Fujifilm X-H1, so this update is significant in that Fujifilm film simulations are included with the standard camera profiles. This is terrific for raw shooting, where shooting JPEG+raw gives the user flexibility to set up the exposure and in-camera film sim for a particular purpose that may not match the final image - for example, setting up the film sim to Acros (black and white) with particular contrast so that composition in-camera (in the EVF) can be made with attention to the scene's tone, without distracting color information. The JPEG will be Acros black and white, but the raw file will be full color that can be manipulated in C1 with the C1 profiles or the Fujifilm film sims as the starting point.
The new gradient and radial gradient tools are parametric, meaning they act like vector objects than can be resized, etc. as opposed to the previous gradient in v11 that laid down a bitmapped mask when you drew it. This is excellent, and permits refinement quickly and efficiently. On top of that, the new luma mask can be added to each of these mask types, as well as the standard painted mask. The luma masking means that you can build your mask for a particular image and then apply it to similar images (in terms of exposure) that may have different composition.
V12 prompts the user to "upgrade" the processing engine from v11. I have not attempted to observe any difference in the output as a result of changing the rendering engine - initial observation indicates that it is not noticeable.
It is not painful to update - you pay, you download, you activate with your new license just like always. I was able to upgrade Capture One Pro from v11 for $149 US (I did not use any coupon code, but there are plenty floating around the internet, typically for 10% off). I have been upgrading since when I bought the full version at Version 6. The upgrade prices have always been reasonable.
The new version supports pretty much all of the new cameras, including the Canon EOS-R and the Nikon Z7 and Z6, as well as the Fujifilm GFX 50R. So they are keeping up with all of the latest and greatest mirrorless cameras that have been unleashed in the last few months.
My personal opinion is that it is worth upgrading. You can download a free trial, which I encourage you to do. There is a new set of videos describe the features of v12:

and the library of videos from Phase One related to Capture One is vast - take a look at their youtube channel. There is a webinar scheduled for 6 December that you can register for too, which will walk through the new version:

Have fun!
