CScottIV I should keep some things to myself! More info | Dec 03, 2018 19:28 | #1202 C Scott IV wrote in post #18763796 I agree and disagree. As a landscape photographer, if you already have a 5D IV and you wouldn't benefit from the EVF (think 10-stop filter) or flip screen then it probably doesn't make sense to get the R. If you are happy with "what Canon has in every other current camera" then it probably doesn't make sense to get the R. But if you are like me, using a 80D with a 10-stop filter and can barely see if anything is sharp on the LCD because of the glare, and want to go full frame it makes a lot of sense. Then you have the bonus of the RF lenses, etc. I thought about the 6D II but I didn't need full frame 80D with its small AF area. The R really works for me for landscapes. And the 80D works well for wildlife. I forgot to mention Diffraction Limited Aperture. It was really obvious on the 80D. The R is much better for landscape photography in that regard. Charles

For years with the original 7D I only shot after sunset or in full overcast, excluded the sky and exposed to the right in order to get any shadow detail. Or used HDR. The first two stops on the shadow end of the histogram looked like mud. So I would shoot in low contrast light so I could stretch the histogram in post. I was able to get some decent shots but had to work for them. Charles

The first two stops on the shadow end of the histogram looked like mud. So I would shoot in low contrast light so I could stretch the histogram in post. I was able to get some decent shots but had to work for them. When I got the 80D the first thing I noticed was it overexposed without exposing to the right. So I started shooting more like you, Jeff, by underexposing a bit. Then I was able to get blue skies and still have shadow detail. The R is pretty close to the 80D as far as metering and usable shadows goes. Maybe better. It sure is nice to have usable highlights and shadows without resorting to HDR. I still like shooting in low contrast light because I love subtle transitions in the tonal range. As far as exposure settings in post processing goes, normally I set the white and black points using the curve then move the middle up or down until get what I'm looking for. Some times I make an S or reverse S curve. It usually doesn't take that much. Setting the white and black points usually brings the saturation to about what I saw from behind the camera. Did that answer your question, Jeff? Charles .. Yes and No... I see your answer as never... and that is what I hoped for. Shooting low and pushing up has always been a thing I do until using the R as it seems to not give me the grief as much as the 7DII did.. I'm sure the 80D and the 7DII are much the same in the respect. I have to say though I have not had enough time shooting the R to make a real comparison as I just can't use it for a day and do a review. Jeff ........, 7D, 70-300L, 100-400LII

Maybe its time to look at how they measure their few hour review.. Maybe a raise of hands by those that think the manual focus guide was meant for 8 to 10 miles away rock formations.......... or maybe macro work ?? Or all the guys that have pushed their exposure slider all the way to the right in the last year... what rubbish... There's better ways to get that job done. Maybe they should just wait and see what comes out of the population in images... Youtube is getting to be a huge joke.. I have no emotion either way. Personally I think the new gear bug is a real pain... I had no choice but to be looking. I miss the 7DII everyday as a shoot everything camera, mine was just starting to really get good as broken as it was. I hate going through the pains of it all. I would much rather just shoot. I think your best off to stick right where you are. The 7DII is hard to beat for the average joe just shooting for the fame and glory of it all. The R is nice in many ways but you have to out shoot the jerks that complain about the little things... That evens the playing field.
