I have a better (sharper) example of this but it's mainly to show the bokeh so this one will do.

It has the normal ingredients (F/2.8 & distance between subject and background) but there is another factor. There are kerosene heaters along the sidelines when it's cold & the fumes behind the subject makes a really cool effect.

Setting up for a Christmas card shot with my girls. Thought I'd experiment a little.

Small Christmas lights set 55ish feet away (one end of my 60' building). Focus distance was roughly 10' from me.

Pretty sure this will be way too thin of a DOF when actually shooting my girls, but thought it'd make a nice artsy shot.
