I have the Canon 100-400 II and rate it as my favorite all time lens. I mostly use it on my 7DII, and with the crop factor, I'm getting a magnification equivalency of a 640 mm lens. For my BIF shooting that works out really well. If I were shooting mostly static bird shots, or my full frame 5D IV a lot more often, I'd most likely prefer the Tamron 150-600 lens. If I end up purchasing another birding lens, it will most likely be the Tamron 150-600.

I was thinking of getting the 100-400 II together with the 1.4x extender....
Arrgh !~ :p

Ah-keong...That 100-400 II lens with the 1.4TC would give you some serious reach on your 7DII. You are looking at the equivalence of an 896 mm lens. The 1.4 TC works really nicely with the 100-400 II. The only drawback is that you loose an F stop, and would have to shoot wide open at an f/8 rather than an f/5.6. The loss of image quality is very minimal. I truly think you'd be quite happy with that lens, especially if you're looking for more reach.

Great combo. I have both and use them together frequently. Make sure to get the 1.4X III.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Fourth on the above suggestions. The 100-400 Mk2 + 1.4X extender replaced my Tamron 150-600 as the go-to birding lens. It has a bit better IS, a bit better AF precision, and a bit better micro-contrast.

I am just a hobby shooter,so have not changed camera or lens since buying years ago,but my t2i is not going to last much longer. I do not want nor can afford to upgrade my main lens, my older Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS . Will the 7d2 work with my older lens? All suggestions welcome.

How does the 100-400 + 1.4 combo handle BIF and moving targets (aircraft)? Although I’ve been very happy with the Sigma 150-600, I’ve kicked around the idea of consolidating the (now seldom used) 70-300L and sigma down and replace with the 100-400.
