Most times when you want to comment on more than one post at a time, you click the "MQ" button at the bottom of the post. Then you continue clicking on the "MQ" button on each additional post on which you'd like to comment. When you get to the last post on which you'd like to comment, you click the "QUOTE" button. This will put all of your comments into a single post.

is it not the fact he's hitting reply and see's his own replies by the photo they appear in but to everyone else they just appear at the end with no context?

Lol... I've used that excuse plenty of times, but I come by it naturally as well too.
