This thread is killing me I have the 1DX and the 5D4 and have been drooling for the mark II for the past year. I’ve also been following the EOS-R thread and now feel I may be late to the game and should maybe hold out for the next EOS-R release......tough choices

Shot the 1DX2 alongside my 5D4 this afternoon, and was able to photograph a semi-tolerant Barred Owl from the same spot, same lens (100-400 II w/ 1.4xIII). Almost similar metering. Basically, I just wanted to see what the cropped photos would look like side-by-side, if the extra resolution is noticeable. Aside from the obvious, the 5D4 photo had a yellow cast to it, even after matching WB. I tried to match the look between the shots (color, saturation, sharpening, etc). Overall, the 1DX2 just seems to make a cleaner file, requiring less work.

Not the most scientific comparison, but that wasn't my intent... I just wanted to do some real life comparisons. Thoughts?

This matches what I've seen when I've done the same test. The 1DX2 wins even when cropping. I did another test and asked my wife to pick 1 or 2 on the basis of which has better details. She didn't know what was being compared (ie, camera, lens, postprocessing, etc). She picked 2.

Congratulations!!!

By the way, have you ever held one of these things?
If you have not, just wait until you do!
They feel as solid as a tank and just plain great.

I wish you much luck and success with this camera body.

(I love mine)

I have Mark, I also owned a 1D4 for a while too. Thank you.

Canon R6 II, RF 800mm.

This has been my experience as well. 1Dx2 look better, have true color and they are sharper to my eye. I also think they handle the highlight adjustments a ton better than the 5D4 files

It may be in combination w/ the AF-point linked metering, but the 1DX2 does a LOT better job of metering. Also, for these ISO values, the 1DX2 held together just a little better as well.

My wife picked the 5D4 shot, only because she liked the pose of the owl better. She didn't notice the extra 10MPX

So now that I've been able to see these photos on a larger (non-Retina) LCD monitor at work, I'm seeing the 5D4's resolution advantage is the minute detail in the bark of the tree. It's by no means a huge difference, and I'd be hard pressed to pick it out if presented the two shots side by side. Yet, I'm certain that in some scenarios the 10MPX advantage would be apparent, but is it enough when compared to the other 1DX2 features, that I will pick the 5D4 over the 1DX2 for my regular shooting? Not a question I need to answer because I'm keeping both, but from here on out I know what camera is going outdoors with me :)

Im witing on the next R release body. If it had dual cards i will sell the 5D4 and jump all in. I will keep the 1Dx2 for sure and w/o any doubt. I think its going to take a full 3-5 yrs to see the transition but make no mistake the transition is underway. My plan is to keep the 1Dx2 and use it with my existing glass, get an EOS-R with an adapter and a 24-105. I will probably get the new 50R as well.

My plan is to use what I have, and move into the R system slowly. When great optics become available that I want, I will buy them for the R mount body. And I will buy the adapter to use EF glass on the R if I want to or I can use the 1Dx2 with the non R glass. I think it puts me in best of both worlds

I have seen first hand now how great the optics are for the R mounts. Again, its a no contest and no brainer to me as to how superior they are. The optics are beyond excellent and they blow anything canon currently has in its line up out of the water for performance, sharpness, color and contrast. They are Zeiss otus quality all the way and they are gonna cost like crazy.

We have no idea what Canon is going to release for 2019 but they have indicated nothing new for lens for EF bodies and that they will be catching up the line up with EOS R Mount lens. Tis will be primary function for Canon from everything i have read

So my best guess is that the next logical choice for Canon is an EOS R body, dual cards , with good burst rate, aimed at professional market for the next body release and more announcements for R glass. Look for an 85 1.2 or 1.8, look for a 70-200 and a 24-70 F/2.8 and a 16-35 F/2.8 or F/4 all R mount lens for 2019

I think the DSLR is dead on arrival after 2019. So I am not buying a thing until i see where they are going

Mike,

I am in the same position as you (1DX II as my main body). You stated that you are keeping your 5D4, until the next R-series comes out with dual memory slots. But, let's say your 5D4 got dropped in a lake, or from a tall building. Would you buy another 5D4 to replace it, or go ahead and get the current EOS-R?

If I already had the 5D4, I am fairly certain I would keep it also until the next EOS-R came out. However, since I don't currently own a 2nd body, it makes things for me a little more interesting.

I shoot weddings so I just wont go to a wedding with a non dual card camera

That said, I have had an EOS-R in my cart 2 times, I was willing to forgo dual cards and use it in studio and for portrait sessions. Those types of sessions could be redone where as a wedding cannot. I could easily sell the 5D4 and use a way up on the count 5D3 until the next announcement. Just go look at what is being produced in the EOS R thread. It really is a no brainer to me. Its a great portrait camera. It has no speed at all for sports and wildlife shooting. I need to play with the AF and servo on it to see how good/bad it is for sports and wildlife needs. But for portraits, its a no brainer in my opinion.

I love all these shots! I'm 2 months away from getting the money for a 1DXII and I use the photos you and others posted to this thread to justify it to my wife!

I have Mark, I also owned a 1D4 for a while too. Thank you.

I ended up getting a 1DIV when I was having problems with my 7D2. The first thing I noticed after how well it focused was the colors.

I’m seeing exactly the same thing with my 1DX2. What I see with my eyes, the camera records.

What is your 1DX and 5D4 not doing for you now? I have looked at the 1DX2 several times, and the only thing it really provides me over the 5D4, for example, is burst speeds and driving the lenses with the LP-E4 a bit faster than the LP-E6 can do. If the 1DX2 had the resolution of the 5D4, that is what I would be shooting with, that is more important to me currently over burst speeds.
