I can only speak of what I've got and used, sadly minimally.
FE 55/1.8
Voigtlander 40/1.2
FE 24/1.4GM

David you know me=wildlife..bokeh might matter a bit more than I'd like to admit.
I know a crap background for a bierd shot can ruin it no matter how sharp and how neat
the wing position.

Got me on that one. Moon shots, 1/250? I know the Moon moves, faster than one would think.
How fast of a shutter to get the plane flying across the Moon?

More important might be the gimbal you choose and how high an angle it can swing to before the camera body/body+grip hit and stop the swing.
As far as fluidity that too depends on the gimbal quality. Something like a Jobu Junior (and many other good ones) are perfectly smooth...and as mentioned,
when balanced stay where you put them.

I can only think through this, and sadly don't have a concrete answer for plane flying through Moon shots :(

1/500 to 1/1000 would do the trick.

Will look into the brands

Just want to clarify that I’m just curious about what everyone’s personal taste in bokeh is...this isn’t a lens recommendation request.

That said, I miss owning the Otus 55mm (though I have no regrets selling it), and it would be nice to somehow replicate it (if possible). For that reason I am indeed considering adding the Sony FE 50mm 1.4 ZA as it has some similar qualities (though the bokeh isn’t comparable). Other possibilities include CV 40mm, Sigma 40mm Art, Sigma 50mm Art. But none of that is really the reason for my bokeh question...I’m just curious what your personal bokeh likes are. :)

BTW, I put a $2000 cap on my question to avoid obvious stuff like 400mm GM or Canon 200mm/2, etc.

85GM hands down.

Sigma 135 has a greater quantity of blur because of the FOV compression, but the 85GM has better quality blur. I think 85 leads to more interesting bokeh too. 135mm compresses a lot of the interesting details in the background, and that look gets stale after a while. 85mm is great because it still pulls a lot background details into the frame, but blurs them out so you this beautifully rendered scene.

Bonus bokeh mention....35mm sonar in the rx1 cameras!

Sounds like you're making an argument for 85mm's ability to provide a nice balance of compression, subject separation, but still retain a bit of environmental detail. I totally agree. For these reasons 85mm has always been my favorite FL.... with wide open 35mm being a close second. If I was a working photographer (or had a crap load of $ to drop on my photography hobby) I'd totally have one of the Sony mirrorless FF cams with the 85GM. I actually tried the 85GM on the a6500 a couple years ago but couldn't do the working distance. It was too similar to 135mm on FF which I used for a long time but finally got rid of cause it was a pain to use for portraits.

On another note.....I love flash photography! This is just a quick snap with a 32" westcott but I think it really helps to make the causual portrait pop. Not to mention I love looking at pics of my beautiful boy. ;-)a

I never thought a non-portrait guy like me would ever say it, but ever since I bought my Batis 85mm it’s become a favorite for me. I’m tempted to buy an a7 III so I can use on my walks much more effectively (superior AF).

Dude, while 85mm may be considered the ideal FL for portraits I feel it's a Wonderful length for walk around. Toss a 35mm prime or a wider zoom in the pocket and you're set!

Nice to hear from you David!

85GM is pure magic for sure!

What anout the 100mm GM? Wasn’t that literally made just for bokeh? Personally I never liked the way it renders and would never buy one, but since I’m just yapping about best bokeh I was just curious where it ranks among bokeh connoisseurs.

Discussion Question:

What lens do you believe has the best bokeh for under $2000.

Another vote for 85GM...I use it so much more than I thought I would. I rarely used my EF 85 f/1.8...but the GM just produces such nice images. And it makes a good medium telephoto landscape lens.

I’m starting to be sorry I asked, cause you all are really making me want one!

Adding the 16-35mm GM is my priority but I’m open to looking at eventually switching from Batis to GM. Although I really am just sincerely curious of everyone’s lens bokeh thoughts, I also admit I’m looking to fill the “magic-lens” hole I’ve had since I sold the Otus 55. Maybe the 85 GM is my answer...something to consider anyway.

Loxia 21mm on the buy/sell at FM if any are interested.
I even ordered the little doo-hickey from Germany to make it easier to
dismount---never applied it.

I've never used it. Vinz rented it at one point I think.

From what I've seen of the 100GM, its sort of a specialized lens. F2.8 is sort of lacks character in terms of the degree of blur, so unless you shoot near MFD, it can be underwhelming. But if you shoot up close (head-shots, or detail shots like flowers), then the quality of the bokeh is supposedly top notch. I think a 135 f2.8 STF would be interesting.

Thank you Robert. That’s the advantage of the 1” sensor. The files were pretty clean. It sure was a beautiful sunrise.
