Don’t get me wrong I love both bodies I’m currently shooting. I shoot a combination of portraits sports and wildlife. I’ve been shooting primarily my 5d4 for more of the portrait side and the 1DX for wildlife and sports. When shooting sports I’ll carry both bodies and shoot the 1DX primarily and the 5d4 will be setup with what I’d say is my second choice lens for the particular sport. This combo has been working well. Why the 1dxii you ask...well it’s not because I want to spray 14fps I typically will only shoot 3 frames on average. I’m not quite sure how to explain it but the 1dx to me just performs much better for action and how it renders in low light to me. The three frames I capture are closer together then the 5d4 capturing more of what I’m after during the movement cycle. The 1dx also seems to absorb light faster then the 5d4. For example when shooting hockey if shooing the same setting and same glass and a exposure comp. to maintain whites the comp on the 1dx is always less. So in a nut shell I want another DX body for my action. The movable spot meter also has my attention for my wildlife along with everything else the mark II has to offer.

The 5d4 can do sports at ISO 12800 and higher, and with the resolution, should compare favorably to the 1dx2. You should find them very close. The EOS R may be the worst of the three at high ISO.

Mirrorless is certainly the future, I've seen it with sony.

There will 100% be a 1DX Mark III, mark my words ;-)a

I feel that maybe the "7D mark III" and the "1DX mark III" would be the last DSLR development as of 2020 Olympics while resources would be diverted into the Canon mirrorless R&D.

I must say the potential of the R mount is great, packing with features like control ring, new design potential for wide angle lenses, etc

meanwhile as of 2018~2019, lets enjoy what we have now, the 1DX mark II !~ :p

Two things, wholly unrelated to one another:

1) considering that the 1DX2 has metering linked to Spot AF point, has anyone went from reverted from back button focusing to using the shutter button half press? On my Fuji x100F, I'm doing ok with using shutter button for AF+metering. I might try it out and see how it goes, but I think it might mess with my muscle memory.

2) Lightroom doesn't recognize the CFast card automatically on my Macbook Pro, nor does it eject it once photos have imported. What am I missing here?

On the video side, dont't forget about 4K, 60 and 1080, 120fps - one of the main reasons i bought my 1DXii.

I was intending to check in and see if the eagle had landed, Derek :-) Drink some soup, take some Dayquil, and go shoot something before it all wears off!

Ended up with the winning bid on a low bid offer on E-bay for a used 1Dx II. Now to wait and watch the tracking number so I can start playing with it before Christmas.

I like the video showing the 400mm f2.8 being hand held! Not for very long...

Be surprised what you can get used to! Often I am trackside with the 200-400 with built in extender for 8>10 hours, on average 2k shots. You certainly know the following day ;-)a

If it is the 400mm f2.8 iii then at around 2.85 kgs it is eminently hand holdeable as that is a couple of hundred grams lighter than the 500 f4 ii and a whopping eight hundred grams lighter than the 200-400!

A coupla bodies and a few lenses

Do you use a monopod? 8-10 hours is a long time!

I do on occassion with a pro media head, but quite often I only intend using the lens for an hour or so and end up staying out. . . . . always kick myself afterwards! WSBK HERE (external link)

Have done a few Zoo visits handheld as swinging the monopod around can be a bit cumbersome and for some reason people get upset when you 'accidently' hit them with it lol.

Great web site. I would love to get the new lens but there's no way I can afford it. I hand-hold the 100-400 Mark 2 (on a 1DX2) for a full shinty match (2 x 45 minute halves) and do wonder if I would manage 1kg extra. I see the other people with monopods and just know they are not for me. I like being mobile and walking the sidelines.
