Chateau D'if
Built in 1524 on orders of King Francis I

Fortress turned into a prison (something like like the Tower of London?)
Home of the Count of Monte Cristo

The dreaded Chateau D'if.
Thanks for posting that one, Capn Jack - heard plenty of it in books and films but didn't know what it looked like.
Who'd have imagined, in 1524, it would have had a nice radio tower and what looks like a microwave tower built on it.

Grain Tower. A gun tower. Built mid 1800s to protect the River Thames, Medway and docks at Chatham from attack by the French - bless 'em! All is forgiven!
Used in both WW1 and WW2.

Wiki-link for your edification.
