I had a similar experience in the beginning but realized my focus point was over in the corner and the round circle was just the centre of the screen..

Not sure if this is what happened to you... just thinking out loud.. The af point goes over so far its out of our regular thinking

It was fairly centre, a bit above actual centre.

Hey Dave - how long have you had the new 100-400?
Mine occasionally acts like it can’t find anything to focus on and just strokes away until I stop it - on my 6D. Not frequent but frustrating at times. I find if I use the focus ring on the lens and get it close then the lens will finally lock in accurately. I think it is more a lens issue than a camera focus issue. Absolutely no experience on a R.

Well I just threw on the 100-400LII and walked outside and mine doesn't miss a beat. First day with some sunshine in a long while...

Sun yes but its dang cold out too... -18c or about 4 below zero I think.

Jeff, just for fun try and get some of those shots "in focus"... sheese.

Well done.

It might be more helpful to try to re-create Dave's failure, rather than reinforce your own success. Look for a small branch or plant and see if your camera locks on. We all agree that it'll lock onto a full grown deer

Im not trying to help Dave... He's a big boy...

There is No way on earth to recreate Daves dilemma.... He's on his own.. He told you so in saying that he was just informing us of his experience..

I've experienced unending hunt with just about every mirrorless camera I've had I think. First time I mounted my 24-240 on my A7R3, it focused fine at 24mm. Then I zoomed to 240 and it just searched and searched no matter where I pointed it. I "helped" it once with MF, then it was spot on from then on.

I'm blown away by the RF lenses every time I mount them. Particularly the 24-105. Focus seems instantaneous. Go from near to far and just tap AF-ON and "bam", it's in focus. I remember one reviewer saying Fuji I think it was has the fastest focusing - maybe that was all around, but man this thing seems hard to beat.

Personally I think he should jump one a plane and we'll shoot it up this week... I mean Sydney's not that far away... Its about time we shot together anyway.. Right
