a7R III users: I am curious, do you ever use the pixel shift technology?

I may be doing a big gear upgrade this year and if I do I’ll want a new body with better AF. I plan to keep the a7R II, which remains great for land and urbanscapes. So, I’ll be trying to sort out whether I have a real need for the a7R III vs an a7 III or even a9. Thoughts and suggestions?

On the lens side thinking in terms of adding 16-35mm GM, 50mm 1.4 ZA, 100-400mm GM. And maybe side-grade from Batis 85 to Loxia 85.

i tried it once but that's it.

this is pixel shift + focus stacking.

Nice. :) It just really seems like too much a pain to be practically useful, but thought I’d put the question out there to either confirm or debunk my suspicions.

I've tried it a few times but it is a pain using the Sony software I would recommend trying "Pixelshift2dng" which automates the process and ends with a .dng file that can be further edited in the Adobe Raw Editor.

Here's the link for more details. It's still in beta.

unfortunatly my a7iii does not have pixel shift tech but my olympus em1m2 does and i use it when i want the most detail i can get in the scene, the olympus needs no extra software as it does the shift in camera, also wit focus stacking the olympus does that in camera as well takes about 4 seconds,,,,,haha, the oly has many many many features i wish the sony had, live comp is one thats super fun on the oly, on the oly using pixel shift it saves the file as a 50mp raw and very detailed jpeg right in the camera, they recomend a tripod but ive shot pixel hand held with no issues

Nah man... you don't want it :D You should try it out some more so you know you NEED it :P

Lol I'm already trying to rationalize it since I need something longer than 135mm. GAS.

Bigger gear priorities on the list right now though!

I think its mostly useful for still-life. I've tried using it outdoors on a tripod and have encountered the colored pixels when things move even a little bit. Granted my tripods aren't the best, but even the slightest bit of movement (like trees swaying in wind) will create nasty artifacts.

Pixel shift is mostly worthless. It’s a hassle to use. Next gen bodies should offer it in camera output to a single raw. Then we would use it.

Thank you to each of you for the helpful pixel shift replies today! It’s a shame it’s just a mostly impractical gimmick. I recall some excitement about the feature when the specs were first announced.

Next question is for MM and any other wildlife photographers here. For wildlife, which is more valuable: shooting speed of a9 or cropability of the a7R III?

Judging by the images I see posted here and on FM, the a9 appears to be the preference for wildlife over the a7R III.

Evaluating my future as a shooter living in a small-town I may need to shift more into that photography genre and be mainly landscape/nature focused. A few years back I dabbled in it with a 5D III and EF 500mm f/4L IS, and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Always regret selling the a99ii. Sold to my personal physician who as still using a circa 1998 Nikon. He was amazed
going from an ISO limit of 800 to over 50K :)
Here's my favorite shot from the a99ii-

IMAGE: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4263/35280622595_c0157e0a13_o.jpg
IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/VKCpWt (external link) Buteo hears the dinner bell rs (external link) by MedicineMan4040 (external link), on Flickr

So a9 AF/AF-C tracking versus cropability of the A7Riii.
For this next shot I switched from using the a9 to the A7Riii. The a9 was getting many many shots but cropping in left mush. It took many more tries
with the A7Riii but at least I got something-

IMAGE: https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4614/38963724055_8bcb643099_o.jpg
IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/22n6gFM (external link) First SEO BIF 2cd beat (external link) by MedicineMan4040 (external link), on Flickr

So out west couple a weeks ago for the long distance hail-Mary's I'd use the D500 for the pixel density of the crop sensor. It gave me several keepers the a9 would not have with its pixel challenged density eh, but the a9+100-400 was primo for close to mid distance.

So David, ask yourself how far will your targets be mostly. How long is the glass you'll be using?

If I wanted a do it all it'd be the A7Riii hands down but the a9 for the mid-distance shots and for Milky Way is the better choice.
I experienced the same with the 1DXii vs. the 7Dii, many more keepers with the 7Dii because of cropability, which begs the next question-how much light
do you think you'll have when wildlifing? 1DXii would give me low light/high ISO images when the 7Dii could not.

A coworker asked me just the other night, knowing (he looks at my Flickr stream) I'm also using Nikon, if I planned on migrating to Nikon.
Here's my answer (a9+100-400GM)...from the trip out west a couple of weeks ago-

Now David, after I get the a7000 ask me this question again!

David, I like your new logo. Looks clean. Sorry I can't help with the gear choice as I don't shoot wildlife.

I was hoping for fog this morning but it didn't materialize. I did manage to get this shot of the bridge and winding road leading you back to the twin peaks.
