OK, I tried to do all of the above. Was in M, set the f stop to 4.5, set shutter speed to 1/1000, set ISO to auto. Set to AI servo, case 1, defaults. Chose very small zone of AF points. And I just couldn't get the camera to focus at all. It would take a photo, but it wouldn't make any attempt to focus--would just take a very blurry photo. Well, photos. Finally I put it back in green box mode and got a few shots in focus (just on the water, not of anything in the air). Drive mode was multiple shots. I really can not figure out what I am doing wrong. In green box mode focus points would beep and light up red, but this did not happen otherwise. Camera is 5DMKIV and lens is 100-400II. I don't seem to have this problem with my 5DMKII or my SL2, where I just choose the center focus point out of the nine that are available. I even cleared all settings and started over. I am probably missing something obvious. I do not have a local person to give me some help. If anyone has any suggestions I am open. Thanks again.

This morning the sun was shining for the first time in many days, so I tried out some things, and it turns out that I can not get this lens to focus in ANY mode other than green box, so rather than continue to derail this thread I am going to head over to the 100-400II thread to ask for help, and will let you all get back to enjoying these stellar, awesome images! Thanks to all who tried to help with this.

Does your camera focus when you press the AF-ON button on the back of the camera?

Another possibility may be that someone has set it for back button focusing, disconnecting focus from the shutter button. This would explain why it started focusing on green box, as it would then have automatically reverted to shutter button focusing.

UPDATE:

OK I'm back, having to eat crow, which is perhaps fitting since this is a bird thread. . .

A bit of background: I recently bought my 5DMKIV from a well-respected POTN member who told me he had reset it back to all of the factory defaults before sending it to me (camera looks brand new, no complaints whatsoever, has worked perfectly except for this focus issue). I thought it couldn't possibly be set to BBF because it arrived reset to factory defaults (I thought). On top of that, I myself Cleared All Camera Settings several times, so I didn't think there was any possible way that it could be set to BBF.

But did I actually CHECK it? Noooooo, because in my mind that couldn't be what was happening.

But Pippan was correct. This morning just for the heck of it I tried BBF and everything came into view, nice and clear. Turns out Clear All Camera Settings is somewhat misleading in that it does NOT, in fact, Clear All Camera Settings. That menu item is perhaps a bit of a misnomer (might be better named Clears Most Camera Settings, But Perhaps Not The One You Want To Clear, So Check Around).

This morning under C.Fn3: Disp/Operation--->Custom Controls, I discovered the option to return all Custom Controls to the factory defaults, and it solved the problem. I may want BBF at some point, but right now I want it to focus when I half-press the shutter, and that is what it is doing.

Thanks Pippan, and thanks again to everyone else who tried to help.

Yes it does. It now also focuses when I press the shutter button halfway.

Some osprey shots from today and one from a while back that I decided I really like...

to snatch a fish... wish I had been on the other side... seconds after the last shot another osprey dive-bombed him and he dropped the fish... lucky fish I guess.
