Thanks, Archibald. Yes there was a Gull coming into the frame so I had to crop it a little tighter.

Hi, Mike! Thanks for the comments.

I got the RX10 about a month ago. I was motivated by the pain in my back (since relieved). I'm not that experienced with it yet, but so far I would say compared to my 7D2:
  • It is light-hungry
  • BIF tracking works very well
  • Exposure control is oddly kind of poor
  • Colors are sometimes a bit off
  • Cropability is marginal unless you are at low ISO.

I haven't got BBF figured out yet. For now I'm using continuous focus with focus lock (as necessary for recomposing) instead, and it seems unreliable. I'm often getting poor blacks due to flare (I guess) - can be fixed in post. The menu system is chaotic. I'm keeping written notes for different shooting situations, including each setting and where to find it.

It is actually a heavy camera for its size. But the system is a lot lighter than an APS-C system with equivalent capabilities. Its advantage is that it is much easier to tote all day.

In short, it is an amazing camera and useful for BIF (and general photography), and can save your back because it is a lot lighter than a 7D2/100-400II. But the latter will give better IQ.
  • Thank you very much, Archibald for your very informative reply. I appreciate you taking the time to give me your take on the new camera.

I know. This shot has eluded you your entire photographic career. You searched for days to line up this classic bird with the moon. The golden sphere slowly rose in front of you. You pressed the shutter, a feeling you'll never forget. The moon, perch, and bird.

You could make yourself rich with photos like these Ray. You just need a bit of Peter Lik marketing balm! :)

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Nice image. The pelican looks radio-controlled, like a model plane.
