Canon Extender EF 1.4X III vs Canon Extender EF 2X III with this lens: Pros & cons of each for BIF or just birds in general? Example photos? Would appreciate info from folks who have actually used one or both. Thanks!

1.4EXIII works very good, almost no loss of IQ and a little slower AFspeed

2.0EXIII with 100-400 5.6 gives you loss of 2 stops so you're at f11 which means no more autofocus(it will work in live-view but that's to slow for BIF) and I can't manual focus fast enough

Thanks. That's the kind of thing I needed to know. I wouldn't want to lose AF.

Hi Annie - I like this shot and the setting. Thanks for posting HMS Westminster. Please tell us all - Where is it???
Looks good on a 4K screen.

Thanks for the feedback, Ray. It's actually taken out my bedroom window as she is heading south down the Inner Sound between Applecross and the island of Raasay!

This is an interesting development. I know the R claims AF down to -6 EV in the center with an f/1.2 lens but that doesn't mean much to me except for comparing to other cameras. Its good to see some real-world examples we can all relate to.

There is someone in the R thread who said AF works with the 2x at f/11. He said it even works at f/16 with the 1.4 and 2x stacked, though in that case he said you have to get it "in the ballpark" manually.

And that's on a 6D level body. Imagine what they'll be able to do with an extra processor or two on a higher end body.

I just found his posts. It's "MatthewK". He said it won't necessarily do BIF, but is otherwise very good.

Anyone who thinks the R is 6D level has only educated themselves on the internet... sad really

But as far as I know he has a 5DIV:rolleyes: and so have I, and I have both extenders so I was able to give him the information he needed. (and I have nothing against the R but I've had my 5DIV for less than a year and I want it to last at least as long as my 5DIII which I used for 6 years).

I know, I was mostly kidding. I used a 100-400 + 2x on my 5D4 with Live View in Alaska last summer. Worked pretty well. Here are a couple of "BIF" shots. The actual bird is a heavy crop. He was a long ways away. That was a 30MP 5D4 file cropped down to 2400x2400. And I'm in no way a BIF guy. That's probably my first attempt.

This lens is simply amazing. I played with it a little bit yesterday in a cloudy and cold weather we had and still amaze me, I can’t wait to try it in a better weather. I can see this lens will be abuse by me and my 500mm version 1 can sit back and rest for a while. I don’t have mark 3 of the TC but I hope it is acceptable with Mark 1.4 ver II.

Jake thanks for the review :) and for chiming in on the other thread while thinking about the other zoom lens. I appreciate it.

I'll give you that, it does work with liveview;-)a . But seriously a far away subject against a uniform background is not the most taxing, try it with fast moving birds which are big/close enough to cover at least a quarter of the sensor!(I fail miserably most of the time and than I don't even blame my equipment :p )

EOS R and Canon Extender EF 1.4X III vs Canon Extender EF 2X III.

I was halfway to the shop to impulse-buy the EOS R and the 2xIII extender after reading Matthewk’s glowing testimonial - Whoopeee!.:-):-) But then I read and analysed the reader’s comments following it. Then reality kicked in, I did a quick handbrake turn and went back home :- ? I had my doubts about this combination anyway. So I have decided to wait for a while before taking a £3k plunge in my bank balance and having to explain it to the boss or buy her new Rolex.:-(
Come on Canon, give us the specs on the new 7DIII or 5DV or EOS R Mk2.

Yep, AF works past f/8 on the R, so break out your 2x extenders! :-)
