I'm been trying to decide on a telephoto lens for wildlife photography. I've been shooting Nikon with the 200-500 and it's a nice setup, but I'm always looking to optimize things and move to a telephoto prime. I've been debating between a 500 PF and a 500mm f/4G or 500mm f/4 Sigma Sport lens. One of the main factors I wanted to determine is how cumbersome it would be to shoot with a gimbal and tripod all of the time with a larger prime lens. Since it would be difficult for me to simulate this in the real world I thought about renting a 500 f/4 to test it, but the rentals are expensive and I lose all that money. Then I happened to see a used Nikon 500mm f/4P lens on the FM marketplace and I purchased it. This gives me a chance to get a feel for the handling of a larger lens. So far I haven't found it too bad and have actually really been enjoying shooting with the lens, despite the fact that it is manual focus only. I also received a vintage Nikon 1.4TCb with the lens that I've been using almost all of the time. It shows some CA in certain situations, but is surprisingly good for it's age. Here are some images with the adapted a7r III and the Nikon lens.
