Exquisite. With breathtaking scenery like that, I’m not sure I’d be quite as interested in bird photography anymore.

I've only really practiced BIFs with seagulls and mallards so far. That said, the mallards have been pretty fast while the segulls just kinda glide. I'm not completely satisfied with the results with my 100-400 II with the 1.4x so far, but attribute it more to my lack of technique and practice. I think when I get the feel of the camera down the BIFs will get better. Do you have any samples of your results with the hawk in flight, even if they're not keepers? I'd be interested to see the outcome.

I've had a result similar to this with one instance of a mallard I saw in flight. It happened very quickly and the light was still too early in the golden hour... couple that with my lack of technique with the camera, I also had a result I thought I got but didn't.

Nothing to share, as I didnt even get a shot in focus using the 2x TC. The combo is as slow as m-o-l-a-s-s-e-s if you aren’t in the general neighborhood with the focus before you hit the AF button.

I’m not much of a BIF shooter because I’m mostly shooting in brushy/wooded areas, so AF has problems locking because there’s too much interference from trees/branches. I wish I knew of a wide open grassy area that hawks frequented and nested bear, but it’s just not that kind of environment.

When a hawk appears out back, it's one of those "grab the camera and run out of the house quick" situations. Once I got to within a football field of him, he flew away like a scared little mouse. Sparrows have more spine than these hawks. Anyways, I quickly switched to AF Expansion and tried to track him as he circled, and I can officially report that the R + 100-400 II and 2xIII TC is HORRIBLE for tracking BIF.

There's probably more possible improvement for sensor-based AF than OVF-mode AF down the road, though. The processing and readout speeds need to increase. Sensor-based AF is still in its infancy. The traditional OVF AF seems to fall off a cliff above about f/10 or so, otherwise we may have seen f/11 OVF AF already, at least for center-point. My 7D2 can AF in good conditions at f/9, but no one seems to be getting f/11 OVF AF, even on the 1DxII, which has better AF sensors. I've fished around for comments from people who have tried "tricked" f/11 OVF AF on the 5D4 or 1DxII, to see if it ever focuses at all, and nobody has replied either way. In the past I have run into people who didn't understand the lingo of AF talk and told me that yes, they could AF their camera at f/16 in OVF mode, only to find out after a lot of probing that they were actually talking about their exposure-time Av value (as if that could possibly even be an issue for AF).

This Northern Harrier was about 90 yards and haulin butt... The focus was ok and of course Rookie operator error is bound to happen. Just showing what I observed with this shot. Ive also noticed my bird shots are pretty much...late ! They are already turned away from me and heading for the hills. The camera just doesn't focus as quick. But once again, practice will help. And the 1/500 with 125 ISO is not the settings I thought I had at this moment? Weird.

Let's say your previous shot of the hawk taking off was proof of concept for BSF - bird starting flight

I get a lot of shots like this so it isn't the 'R' but your description covers most of the reasons I moved from a P & S to a DSLR. I do think people with a high success rate chasing BIF's will be able to compensate a little for the short comings of the 'R'. Gonna be interesting.

These were done with the 1.4x III. The potential is there, I think, as the group of pigeons were quite fast. I can’t remember which AF mode I was using at the time, but I do recall a lot of hunting for focus with the TC.

I just got my R with control ring adapter and grip and I'm shooting everything around the house to get used to the controls.

This camera rocks! This is four things in one as to what I love about it so far:

1) I like shooting low, with the flippy screen, I was able to just bend over and take the shot, no more sniper positioning

2) the focus was spot on with the tag, though I was just aiming for the stuffed animal’s butt

3) my Nifty 50 has come back to life (though I’d love to either get the 1.4 or the 1.2)

4) the low light capabilities are better than I was getting with my 6D

Reasons ?? really curious. I know it kills the R with eye focus and it has dual cards. So Big plus.

I had the A7R2 and then A7R3 in September. I got the R in December. I just shipped out my A7R3 on Thursday. Nothing wrong with it. I’m just more comfortable with Canon ergonomics.

Nice sunny day on my day off when I didn't have other things to do for a change so decided to go on a local Photo Safari of sorts. Was able to spend to spend about four and half hours roaming around looking for things to take pictures of. Nothing spectacular but some good shots and good practice.

First up, how about a seven shot panorama of the Olympic Mountains from Everett WA.

Solid photo right there.
