Got bored of watching the Sony advert on loop and switched it off again. I’ll just check back in a little while and see what happened. Hopefully it’s not just the a6400

So what was announced?

“Sony has officially announced three things:
– A new Sony A6400 (press release here). It has Animal Eye-AF, Intervalometer and cost $900 only.
– A new massive A9 firmware update with Animal EYE-AF
– New Imaging Edge Features for both Desktop and APP.”

Pity a7riii isn’t getting animal eye af.

Pretty cool the a6400 has a built in intervalometer though. Hopefully that’s in all future releases

it is:
from https://alphauniverse.com …h-major-firmware-updates/ (external link)

Firmware Ver. 3.0 for α7R III and α7 III
Sony’s popular α7R III and α7 III full-frame cameras will both receive enhanced Real-time Eye AF performance with the upcoming firmware version 3.0. This will be available in AF-C mode with a simple half-press of the shutter button. Real-Time Eye AF for animals (i) will also be available.

The cameras will also receive interval recording functionality that will allow for simple creation of time-lapse movies (vii). The new feature can be set for anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds, with a total number of shots from 1 to 9999. AE tracking sensitivity can also be adjusted to “High”, “Mid” or “Low” during interval recording, allowing for reduced changes in exposure over the shooting interval.

The new system firmware update version 3.0 is scheduled in April 2019.

A variety of exclusive stories and exciting new content related to all of Sony’s exciting announcements can be found at www.alphauniverse.com (external link), a site built to educate and inspire all fans and customers of the Sony α brand. The new content will also be posted directly at the Sony Photo Gallery and the Sony Camera Channel on YouTube.

Didn't they mention near future firmware updates for a73 and a7R3?

edit: dang, y'all ninja'd up out of nowhere.

Side note: I laid hands on an a9 for the first time today. Someone had popped it in to high-speed mode. Holy crap it rattles off frames like it's a video game.

2 major things I wanted not gear related:

Intervalometer.... coming from an R2 body, this makes me cringe the R3 doesnt have it. I can stack for SR, but bringing a bunch of cables around is bothersome, that darn usb thing is fiddly in the field, and I have to check batteries are good before going out... annoying.

Secondly, new firmware updates on the A9. Such a great camera, but clearly behind the R3 when it comes to slickness of the UI. The R3 hits the spot even if it can use improvements, generally super useful. A9 has major limitation and I hope they bring out picture profiles as well. I want everything 20fps as well, only a few lenses get that speed, and it should be ALL lenses.

yes yes yes :-P

really love using it, totally grows on you, but that firmware is a bit dated. Great fun camera, what I miss with the firmware is an easy way to sort through images and pick keepers, the R3 has a really nice way of grouping burst shots and tagging photos, which makes life a ton easier and faster going through bulk images.

I love to spray and pray with the A9

I hope the built in intervalometer allows you to set an exposure time for a single shot. That’s one of my fav features on my wired intervalometer

This part I find interesting "The cameras will also receive interval recording functionality that will allow for simple creation of time-lapse movies (vii).".

I wonder if it will just organize the images into a folder or create and actual timelapse mp4 like many bodies do now?

The firmware announcement is really exciting but where is my lens :(

I think we will see all manufacturers release more feature based firmware updates as we now have the big 3 all doing it.
