iJustine already has a review on the 6400:

Thanks for sharing.
I've never heard of her but I'm impressed with her knowledge and presentation of her knowledge. Not just a pretty face.
The camera is interesting too, although I will not consider it.

I presume there wasn't a FE35/1.8 at £550 announcement........?? ;-)a:lol::-D:mrgreen: I was hoping on a confirmation & a price as I know of a Samyang 35/2.8 going for £165!! I don't mind having a £165 lens not getting much use.

I'll have to stick to the CV40/1.2E then for now......

every 2 years for a while, the update rate is fast, but I like it. These third gen cameras are so robust, that I may even skip a generation :-P, definitely like the firmware updates, saves me a bunch of money chasing gear. I dont have many issues with the firmware, but animal eye AF, automatic eye AF, I welcome those changes, frees up a button, dont like the placement of the AEL button, so will be nice to free up the AF-on button. Updated lock-on AF is a nice welcome, like the concept, but needs to be quicker and lock better.

for instant video timelapse I forgot about S&Q, unfortunately, the interval shooting isnt based off the app, and very basic looking in nature. it's a shame, the app looks to be nicer as it can make the video and save the raws at the same time if you want. S&Q does well for casual timelapses where you dont care for the best IQ. I'll use S&Q for family videos, but on my own, prefer image rendering.

You know the frequent updates are something that put me off before since I actually like a release every 3-5 years. I know I have a problem with GAS so I don't want the temptation to upgrade every year I like do with my phone already haha. It will be interesting how well the automatic Eye AF will work but I figure there shouldn't be any issue with it.

I tried the S&Q mode once and although it worked well I don't think the quality was as good as a proper timelapse mode like the on Osmo or merging them yourself. Have you used S&Q mode yourself?

Less frequent would be fine with me and more firmware. The Rx1RII has never had a firmware update from day 1!!

Agreed!

I am dying to try a motionlapse with the pocket now that i have the tripod clamp. Will try this weekend

Is there anything they could fix or improve on your RX1?

Yeah I wish they would release the accessories sooner! I am going out to shoot a sunset soon but I don't know how I'll secure the Osmo in the one spot if I try a motionlapse.

With the early iterations of Sony cameras, the rapid pace of new bodies made sense as there were pretty big limitations on hardware front, and as such, huge performance leaps between generations.

But as you said, the 3rd gen bodies have hit a maturity point where any hardware improvements from here would be purely incremental.

I do think competition from Canikon will force Sony to both keep the current pace of releasing new hardware generations while simultaneously supporting older models as much as possible via firmware. Sony's brand competes on the basis of having a technological advantage over Canikon, and their right to compete is built upon how well they can maintain that perception.

I just need to not get caught up in the marketing whirlwind and remind myself that these 3rd gen cameras are more than capable for what I need. I plan to skip a generation going forward.

I personally think in terms of stills there's nothing much they can change. I guess the A7RIV could have a wider AF coverage like the A7III/A9 but otherwise most of the upgrades could probably be fixed by firmware. I think the fact that Sony used the A7RIII sensor again but got more performance out of it shows how good their sensors are.

Canikon don't really offer anything over the Sony with these gens and if they keep their old habits, these bodies will be around for 4-5 years so Sony has plenty of time to plan something big.

For me upgrading is often about getting the best resale value before the new model releases and not always about getting the newest item. I hope I won't upgrade as soon as the a7IV is out but I'll probably let the GAS take control :p

yes, I use S&Q for family stuff since it's so simplistic and not looking for super quality. I've used it for some outings as well, I'm not opposed to it, sometimes I just want a simplistic b-roll type shot for a few seconds, and S&Q is the way to go. I've mixed content with S&Q + iphone timelapses to give me multi angle views in video. I like the app better than what I see here though, it seems a lot more versatile with smart phone like simplicity.

either way, anything to get away from cables, I'm all for it.

Have you considered the Osmo Pocket? I think with your timelapse videos you could do some great work with it and might be easier for you with the motion lapse feature.

for the A6400 no IBIS is the big deal breaker. would have been a hotcake.

To be fair, the IBIS on the a6500 isn’t that great. I’d figure that those who get this for vlogging might be putting it on a gimbal.

I actually have a motion slider rig complete with panning heads (Syrp system), big sliders and small micro sliders, and my gimbal does motion timelapses too, scenarios where I would use them are a different story.

That said, I WILL get an osmo when they go on sale, trying to save up some money for a family trip, and the osmo is the only item I'm itching to have. I'm good with camera and lenses, and the built in interval shooting will be especially nice. The R2 definitely getting sold now, especially if I can find a deal on another R3. No rush though, I'll continue using whatever I have and a third camera isnt very frequent, but nice on occasion.

Playing with the Nikon 50mm f/1.2 AI lens on the Sony A7II. This is Max, and he was up to his usual mischievous activities.

I might have missed it about the a9 firmware update...when does it come out?

An 11 image pano from Kerry Park. Another year or two, the trees will be too tall to shoot from here...

Two releases, March and June? 5.0 has a lot of features, probably gets the camera up to R3 spec. June has interval shooting and animal AF. A bit of wait, but I can pale due for now. Just really happy I can get these nice upgrades without paying. Pretty much my major annoyances are addressed.

" rating and protect functions."

thank god, my life is complete :-P

really hate not having a rate button, especially since the A9 has buttons to spare.

f16 AF, interesting, not sure how useful it will be, but hope that translates to even better low light performance.

The a7iii is getting the eye AF and animal thing, so not the end of the world. The new AF tracking looks nice, will see if better than lock on AF

Yeah, in all honesty, I rarely used Lock on AF and pretty much set my camera to AF-C, wide, and smashed the Eye AF button. It’ll be nice not having to smash the Eye AF button. I’ll hold of on doing the crazy and selling the a7iii and rebuying the a9, especially since it’ll mean I should’ve just kept the a9 when I sold it in September of 2017.

They're saying it can do more sophisticated object recognition (pattern and color recognition). We'll see what that translates into.
