Here's my first ever Kestrel on a natural perch.

Here's a Shoveler. Got fairly close to him, approx 50-60 feet.
And a Harrier that is probably one of the biggest crops I've done. Sadly
the Harrier just would not get anywhere near close enough for detail even at 700mm
on the APS-C sensor.

Some of you may know I feed two or more Red-tailed Hawks here at home in the eastern Appalachian Mountains.
So a real treat to see the Western Red-tailed Hawk Dark Morph while exploring Chaco Canyon Nat. Historic Park.

Cropping to the max the D500 will allow (for me) and still using the 1.4 for 700
At this subject to background distance I see the funky bokeh some talk about. I used to see the same
thing on the EOS 100-400ii at certain distances. I'm ok with it, would be easy to smooth out in post.

I've seen the saem thing with 100-400mm, AND 500mm f/4L IS on occasion when using the 2X.

Where else can I carry, at my age and physical condition, 700mm for 5-6 miles!
Perfect? Nope. I'm good with mighty darned good compared to perfect F4 that kills my back

Nice shot. I saw one land perfectly the other day on a great perch but wasn't ready and missed the shot. I know that feeling!

Many people don't like teleconverters. Without the 1.4 I would have come home from the trip with little from the Nikon.

First outing with the D850. I think I need a wee bit of MFA (or whatever Nikon calls it) but not a whole lot.
