Renata I can't answer all this.
I noticed it cracking as the day wore on, but its hot here - 28-30°C and things are drying fast.
Definitely viscous to begin.
I wondered where it oozed from and why it appeared like it did and also why, to me it's upside down.
I'd thought the tip would be down not up.

It is hard and goes brittle.
Many trees ooze sap and Wattles here are known for it. Its odd stuff to chew - wouldn't recommend, but I've tried it (Wattle ie)

Someone may give more info.
I'm going to post some images of our gum trees, bark, the way it sheds bark, leaves, scribbly markings on bark....
I'll add this also.

Thanks for the info, Richard. I am somewhat familiar with gum trees and their bark because I spent 12 years in Oz but never paid attention to the sap they ooze out.
But, please, post some. Would be interesting to see some after so many years, though I have seen some here in the US, particularly in California some years ago when I visited.

That's amazing, Richard. How solid is the sap? I'm asking because I see some cracks in it which indicates a fairly solid state but I also imagine that as it started coming out it must have been relatively viscous otherwise it would not have been able to flow. Another question is how fast does it take to solidify and is the process caused by evaporation or rather oxidization aka curing. Sorry, didn't mean to sound so crazy scientific...I'm just pesky curious :)

Renata here's a Wattle tree that was full of the extrusions.
Unfortunately pathetic quality.

Sibil I'm still mulling on this to no avail
Looks like a ball point pen, but that doesn't fit well once you move away from the ball end

Richard, it is a 'fat' red ball point pen, the tip of which is showing the reflection from the ceiling light fixture.
