Surely the MkII was only released in 2014?

CPS normally supports lenses for 7 years after they end production/are replaced, which means you should have it covered till November 2021.

That's how I've always understood it in the UK anyway.

Certainly.

The lens still works. It doesn't zoom all the way out to 100mm anymore, and there appears to be a small piece of foam under the front element. I have no idea what it is. It doesn't show up in photos unless it's bright daylight and I've got the lens stopped down.

I've heard enough good things about the MKII that I may be pulling that particular trigger soon...

Why not get it repaired by an independent? One local (to me) is https://perfectimagecamera.com/repair/ (external link) but you can ship to them. Or search for someone in Florida.

quite understand - mine has had the tension ring bearings fail (so I removed the complete tension ring!)
but if you had a working lens, then the fact that a newer version has been released and the older version go out of support, shouldn't automatically mean you need to go shopping...
having said that, I understand the newer version is much better IQ-wise, so would be worth considering changing anyway...

Also, doesn't the new one do away with the "push/pull" zoom?

Sure does, it's now a regular twist zoom, and has a closer minimum focusing distance. Add that to the better IS and IQ and the decision becomes easier.

Got stuff ;)

I've found one locally for $1,400, which is $700 less than the online retailers.

I was never a fan of the push/pull zoom...

I sold my 100-400 V1 and bought the VII. I've seen quite a noticeable difference in I.Q., especially when used with a TC.

I agree with James P.
I still have both the Dust Pump Version 1 and the new Version II. The Version II is what everyone has mentioned.
Was keeping the Version 1 as a back Up. Now that it is no longer supported by Canon, I may have to see what is available for the market. Who knows.
