I keep one of these (external link) in each of our card. I figure it's flat tire insurance. If I have it, I won't need it. :)

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Fun times at work with the deep freeze, batteries dying left and right.

At the beginning of this week I had a 2012 Sonata in with a check engine light on. Had a code for low fuel rail pressure. Checked things out and determined that it needed the high pressure GDI (gasoline direct injection) fuel pump. At 7 years old and 190,000 kms on it, there definitely wasn't any kind of warranty left, it was all customer pay. The pump is a dealer-only item, and $900, plus $99 to install. I installed it yesterday when the part came in. Solved the fuel pressure problem. Went from 81 psi (tank pump pressure) to ~800 psi at idle, right where it should be.
I then did two recall jobs.
I went to take the car outside, but the check engine light came on. Scanned it, erased the codes, and tried again. Light came back on immediately. Code for the Electronic Throttle Control, which puts the car into limp-home mode. Erased them and reset the engine control adaptive values. Came right back. Did this about 5 times, as it is often a fluke with making big changes to the system. Finally got the codes to not reset and took it for a road test, about 7 kms. Car ran fine, so turned in the keys for the customer to pick up.
Last night, after service was closed, they came to pick it up. Same thing happened, so they left it and I got it back this morning. Tried the same things, but with no results. Inspected and tested the ETC with no problems to be found. Eventually the shop foreman took over the job so I could get working on other stuff.
He spent time looking into whether the recalls I did could have a negative effect like this. Eventually he sent an apprentice out on a road test with it. He got about 2 kms down the road and the car died and wouldn't restart. Shop foreman went out to him with a booster pack and tried starting it, with bad results! The car died because the engine seized. When they put the booster pack on it and tried to turn it over, the starter caught fire! It went out on it's own, fortunately.
So they left the car and called a tow truck. And we ordered a new engine for it. These engines are known to seize, so it's not a big surprise. The customers have great maintenance records, so there is no hold up on getting warranty coverage on the engine, with rental car coverage too.

So, now the customer will have a brand new engine in their 7 year, 190,000 km car.

Note to self, don't buy used Sonata. 900$ fuel pump, engine seizing, starter catching fire. Yikes!!!

Now for something completely different, here is the family with the big Parks radio telescope (rural NSW) in the background. It's main claim to fame is that it received the video transmission for the 1969 Moon landing. There is a comedy about it which I reckon is worth a watch https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0205873/ (external link)

Yes, you can still DVD, or stream, or both. We tried the streaming, but it didn't work out for us. What we want is usually not available to stream.
