Eddie, not sure but I think the best combination might be a cheap standard thickness filter to sacrifice as a blank spacer and then use a slim filter for the NDs, I'm not convinced that two standard thickness filters won't vignette but I might be wrong. Interested to see how this works out.

Id have to re-read the FM thread but I think they used two standards and didnt get vignette. I dont even own the lens but just posted it here for the folks that do

Thanks Travis! I was wondering which direction you were shooting from. That's cool. Yeah we started hiking together and then I saw that large dune so I splintered off from the group and hiked up that steep dune. I had a good 360 degree vantage point from there.

Thanks Gene! Yep, I was up on a large dune when I shot this. I thought about climbing down to get closer but the light and color were fading quickly.

I may or may not have a shot with you standing up there then...

I have a question for you guys...someone message me about this...are the images that I have been posting lately...are they really dark to y'all?

My assessment of the screen images you’ve been presenting is outstanding. To cite your latest as an example I love the overall darker tones because it lends extra drama to the light. My recommendation is to keep doing what your doing with the processing because it is just great to my eyes.

Very kind of you David! I learned a lot from this most recent trip. I learned that true landscape photography is hard. I learned that trusting your instincts usually works out in the end. I learned that watching how others work in the field can reveal a lot. I learned that it's important to scout a location to find those interesting compositions. I learned that it's not easy staying put on a specific composition when the light puts on a show in the opposite direction. I learned that being around a group of like minded photography friends sharing a common experience is priceless.

Every bit of that is why I really like group trips...its great to be around like minded people...and for me when they are doing work that I like and look up to...even better.

Thanks David...I work from a dedicated and calibrated desktop that I have spent much time getting the screen right to the point that my prints are not surprises. And so it caught me off guard to find that someone felt my images were much too dark and lacking detail...my histograms all look good, and I cross check on my phone and surface tablet prior to posting almost anything! I spent a lot of 2017 recovering too much shadows, and getting images that lacked character and depth...shadows create that character and depth...so I am going after that again.

So true. This is why its fun to hang around other photographers. I buddy up with my friend Frank who has a great history and body of work but will be the first to tell you hes a good photog not great and always seeking. I learn so much wandering with him on just the where and why vs the camera stuff. Mo owns camera store and is the largest Nikon vendor in the mid atlantic region..... let me tell you he is hilarious and hard to focus..... just wants to shoot every grain of sand or leaf along the way. When we buddy up challenge learn and have fun then we grow as photogs.

Will definitely try to catch you guys next time sad I missed out

I took a look through your exceptional Flickr photostream and all your most recent uploads look spot-on great to my eyes.

When I get to this image ( https://flic.kr/p/23uHq2m (external link) ) - a fantastic scene and deservedly explored image - my critque is that it isn’t dark enough; I want to see more contrast and less washed-out blacks in the deep shadows.

All about personal preferences I suppose. :)

See, that is one of those images from 2017 where I was almost afraid of dark shadows...I found myself lifting them too much, and getting too much light into places that don't have light!

You recent images look great to me Travis. Lots of nice contrast in them which help emphasize the light in them.

Look great to me too. I also just had a look at your Flickr and was taken aback by how many top notch images you have been posting recently. I have been seeing them as you have been posting here but when you see them all together you see how good they all are. Superb work!

on the CV filter discussion just for a point this is with the bombo filter holder, the 10mm, and a graduated ND. Not a great pic or example but had it handy. I do sometimes have to watch for lens reflection with this set up.

If you guys remember the 35 1.4 I bought was decentered. Well I sent it back and the seller contacted Sony. He just sent me the following message -

“I thought you might be interested that Sony have said 'there is a significant backlog' to repairing these lenses and have offered me a full refund. I've turned down a replacement lens given the risk of another decentred one.”

Interesting to see Sony acknowledging the issue

Canon is making some good moves, quick release of RF glass and their new low prices body will be ultra barebones but a good entry. Though I’m sure that each glass will be $1,999 or so.
