See, that is one of those images from 2017 where I was almost afraid of dark shadows...I found myself lifting them too much, and getting too much light into places that don't have light!

What David says x's 10 :)
World is often a dark place, often with shadows everywhere, you do a super job of using them to tell the whole story.

Canon is positioning themselves to win the marketshare game. $1,500 EOS RP will sell well as they have the branding, installed market/users, and have undercut Sony on price. Yes we all know that the a7III is a better camera, but the value proposition is huge for current Canon shooters who want a cheaper entry point to mirrorless cameras that will work more cohesively with existing glass.

It's a bit awkward for Canon to release the EOS RP alongisde a bunch of $2k+ L lenses, but they're simultaneously signaling the future-state of the RF mount for professional use even if the first iteration of the EOS R cameras are not up to to the caliber of Sony's best offerings.

They're doing enough to stop the bleedover to Sony, and maintain their dominance on the camera market in a post DSLR world IMO.. They're basically telling Canon users "wait for us...we got this"

I've been shooting Sony for 7 years now and its been a pretty awkward experience because there were times that Sony seemed to be wandering around in the dark and didnt understand their customers well. It took awhile for them to get a lot of things right....Contrast this to Canon who, as late as they are, seem to know what products to bring to market right out of the gate.

To be clear, I'd never switch from Sony because I really believe they lead the industry in all the areas that matter to me, and you can see how badly they want to win and as Sony customers, we benefit from that....moreso now that Canon is playing to win now too. This is more the marketing/sales/strategy nerd speaking out loud, but market share and sales has no bearing on how I feel about my camera and lenses. :-)

That was my take on Guys experience/experiment.
Nice that it can be done.
Thanks for all the info and the link.

I have to decide whether I'd like that lens or the new Gnarbox 2.0SSD 1TB.
Priced in the same ball park. One saves weight, the other adds :(

I've been traveling for years with a laptop...which over time have gotten smaller and smaller
but my tablet is way lighter and these latest gen tablets are powerful. I rarely process 'on the road'
anymore/use the laptop for big backups. The Gnarbox will backup way faster than a laptop and the
this forthcoming Gnarbox can allow me to use the tablet to peruse the picks if I want.

Speaking of backups. Poof lost many images on the trip west. She didn't do backups yet she had her
laptop with her. She misplaced an SD card and it got lost in the shuffle of many cards only to be formatted
and used several times.....to a point where software recovery methods failed her.
She cried over it.

After an external drive was stolen in Chile ....and even then I backed up not only to the laptop, the hard drive
and the phone...I've been ever resolved to be super redundant.

safest way to preserve data..... remote location via upload/ftp/ect. Anything that's on you at the time, can be off you and gone. Amazon aws is suppose to be inexpensive and basic if you dont have any home solutions. I have an ftp at my mom's and my own home, I could send files to both locations for super redundancy.

Yeah that EOS RP is something I've been wanting Sony to make foooooorever. Rangefinderish compact FF camera without the damn camera hump. Does not need IBIS or all the best spec's for a casual shooter....more interested in something compact and affordable because lugging the a7rIII out with the family feels kind of nuts sometimes.

Hopefully Sony fires back at the EOS RP with a compact FF option + FE 35 F2!

I use backblaze to put everything on the cloud each night. I hate subscriptions but its 5 bucks a month well spent.

I'm a fan of the grip.
Used to be we needed more battery capacity/no more with the new batteries
but it does help with the 100-400, i'm sure even more with the 400/2.8.
Plus, when traveling, if using a Sony battery grip you can charge BOTH batteries via USB which is
real nice. I plug in the usb cable at night...wake up and both fully charged or topped off. I had an off brand
for the Rii ....Velo maybe, not sure....but it didn't have that capability.

Another thing is warmth. Batteries put off heat when discharging (charging too) (especially the big lithiums in the campervan) and two batteries
in the same compartment share that warmth for the cold days of shooting (does it get cold down there in Georgia?)....but can work against you
in mid-July/August. My theory of course.

Another semi-advantage, if you take a spill and the rig goes down--just maybe the battery grip will act as shock absorber if it hits first.

I'm very much considering the grip for when im using the 150-600 and the 70-200... I missed it on my 7D Mark II after having it with my EOS-3, 30D and 7D and i do find it would be nice for counterweight for the bigger heavier lenses and to give me a vertical oriented grip for them.

If you guys remember the 35 1.4 I bought was decentered. Well I sent it back and the seller contacted Sony. He just sent me the following message -

“I thought you might be interested that Sony have said 'there is a significant backlog' to repairing these lenses and have offered me a full refund. I've turned down a replacement lens given the risk of another decentred one.”

Interesting to see Sony acknowledging the issue

I'm surprised this far into this lenses life cycle they still have so many issues. I think a 35mm GM is needed!

First one has a real nice 3D pop to it.

The first was my personal favorite too. This was from a balcony at the museum which is for events only and I had never been up there before.

Well crap. I was supposed to have a colonoscopy tomorrow morning, but it got rescheduled because I screwed up and didn’t eat correctly on Monday. So, knowing I had the FE 50mm 1.4 ZA coming in today I planned a colonoscopy-reschedule-celebration outing in Atlanta tomorrow. And I just now learned that my package delivery has been delayed until tomorrow. Figures. GD FedEx. vmad

Oh well, I’ll just take my existing gear and have fun with that. :)

that sucks. was weather the cause?

Theres a 35mm f/1.8 G coming soon, Should be very small

Id argue IBIS is VERY good to have though for anyone. It works with every lens and never hurts to have it, If anything id argue casual people should want that more...

EOS RP is not interesting to me. Too slow.

No idea. It’s super warm here - tomorrow 80F high - so I can’t imagine a weather delay unless there’s snow up north. Haven’t watched national weather since the polar vortex made its appearance last week.

I want Sony to knock it out of the park on 35 1.8 like they did with the 85. The 50 1.8 is nice-n-cheap but I’m not sure it’s in the same league as the 85 1.8.

I’d prefer great performance + lower price at the expense of larger size versus small size + lower price at the expense of worse performance.

Don’t think we’ll get cheap + great performance + smaller size, but I’d love Sony to prove me wrong.
