It's an upright electric bass. They are called EUB's by bass players. They are fretless and designed to sort of sound and feel like an upright. They need to be plugged in to an amp, of course, some have a full sized curved fingerboard and can even be bowed, and have electronics and pickups but in a much more compact package than an acoustic upright. There are numerous brands, variations, sizes, scale lengths (some are the same as an upright, around 42", some are the same as a bass guitar which is 34") etc. I have played several of them including that one, they are fun, I may get one myself if I could ever figure out which one to get. I know several bass players who play them for either part of a gig or all of it. Dennis here plays it most of the gig but plays a bass guitar for certrain songs. Ed

I now rarely take the dslr to gigs when I'm go to see the band and just use the crappy camera on my phone, but here is one from the last gig I was at, The Anynumbers at Night People in Manchester UK, Hosted photo: posted by whiteflyer in ./showthread.php?p=18724287&i=i226693480 forum: Performing Arts Looks like a rough joint with that barrier in front of the band! That would be great for traveling with in comparison to a full-size bass. I do see some bass players with a mini-sized upright that is less than half the size but still looks like a regular upright only smaller. Honestly for me when bass is being played in a band it's hard to hear much difference, the only time I can tell is when there is a bass solo being performed. "When I shoot something I use a Canon!"

The one Dennis plays is a 34" scale I think, same as a bass guitar. There are others with the same scale length as a full or a 3/4 upright. The compact acoustic ones you describe are good for travel and since they have pickups and are amplified the smaller body doesn't really affect stage sound, like you say. The EUB's come in an unbelievable array of styles and configurations, some even in 5 string. Google EUB and you'll see. Ed
