Thank you Probably should have said tension, and I meant nuts, not bolts. Long time ago, but I'd take a micrometer and measure something. avondale87 wrote in post #18665834 ![]() There's a lot that goes on with bridges we are completely ignorant about, thankfully.

It wasn't for work, but just the opportunity to photograph from that vantage point. There are more shots HERE ![]() The Bay Bridge was scary - the construction elevator only went to 500 feet. To get to the top there was 30 feet of scaffolding that wiggled like a belly dancer and looked like it was tied to the main structure with ribbons, and for added "fun" there was a 15 knot wind. Those others are awesome and interesting.

True that, but the amazing part is to see the engineering that was accomplished in the 1930's (Wikipedia tells me that the Golden Gate opened in 1937). It was designed with pencil and paper, math done by hand, I'll assume reasonably good materials but without the exhaustive QA, NDE and paperwork that is available today, and the design choices probably largely made based on one man's personal experience (as in "I used this feature on this bridge, so let's use it on this one). We do that today, of course, but then run it though solid modeling to validate the design, enjoy detailed peer review, have the work cross checked by our clients, and then check it all again. Frequency and Harmonic analysis simply wasn't available to any large extent without computers that could solve the math, and even today computer modeling is quite limited. Heck, we don't even have accurate torque wrenches today, and the equations to determine bolt stress are debated. Did they even have thread lubricants in 1937? All in all, brilliant engineering. X100T
