Great Thrush (Turdus fuscater). Uncomplimentary genus name, but a pretty bird.

Spent a few hours at one of my local National Trust places, Charlecote Park. Wasn't expecting the Great Tits to be nesting yet - must get the bird box out of the shed and set up. Saw a nuthatch as well.

First one's a Blue Tit, they're in and out of my box too, think they're just sizing it up.

Native Hen and chicks (3 of 4) Tribonyx mortierii found only in Tasmania
Too far off, but they're rather cute fluffy little things but terribly flighty. Parents will hang around but not juniors.

these four little Superb Fairy Wrens were playing together, even grooming each other.
Apologies for ordinary quality, but it was through the window also through some mesh
Thought their cuteness was worth sharing
two on left having a grooming session. I think the other is just getting his male colours, but they also moult so not 100% on reason for the shabby coat

back to the Grey Fantail, Rhipidura fuliginosa
The evening of this saw it sitting on the edge of the fence watching the insects fly past.
Then suddenly it caught one as it flew past and devoured it.
No body movement other than its head. Amazing to watch, but missed any photos

The one I missed was on a post.....only one we saw on the ground was going from weed clump to week clump at 100 mph.

This guy is new... Anyone know what kind of bird? Similar markings to a Nut Hatch, but much larger, about same size as the female Red Wing Blackbirds

It's not uncommon for bird boxes to used as occasional or even habitual roosting sites outside of the breeding season. That's not to say this isn't a nesting bird as they're pairing up here and starting to squabble over nest sites. It's not a great tit though, it's a bluey.

Thanks, you're right of course.

It's funny, the blue tits feeding in the garden always look much smaller than the great tits. It was the size that led to my error, should have checked the facial markings!

Great shot of the woodpecker. I saw one on my visit 3 weeks ago but it was almost hidden by branches and so couldn't get a decent shot. No sign of it this time.

Nice shot, Chris.

Thanks Mike.

Still getting to grips with this lens. Got to work on my steadying technique! I'm finding it hard at max. zoom to stay on the subject's head/eye.
