So if I'm over simplifying it a little bit, for me it's all about the IQ in relation to price point. Technologically everything else is already "good enough" in the current days' camera market. And since we're talking about only minor improvements in IQ when going from roughly 2k (A7III) to 6k (GFX) in price, there's no way I can justify it for myself.

Don't know what shops you are shopping for cameras in but for me the prices are not even close 4K apart, between the A7-iii and the GFX-50r
A7r-iii is €1770 + Tax
GFX 50r is €3464 + tax

Absolutely agree on value being relevant to self need though, get the best fit for what you can spend, for many that is a 135mm camera is it is good at everything.

It's more forward looking for me and not necessarily where MF is relative to FF right now.

To me MF is currently at the place was where the FF mirrorless was 7 years ago....and with the a7 cameras, the performance improvements in things like AF and even sensor performance improved pretty dramatically between generations, and at a very fast pace. I expect the trajectory of MF cameras to follow a similar trend. I rode the a7 train from the very beginning so I experienced first hand how expensive that can get. Much harder to ride that train though when a ticket at each stop is $6k. Better to jump on the train later in the life cycle.

I also think Sony will jump into the MF space sometime soon as they will have a harder to time differentiating themselves now that Canikon have entered the FF mirrorless space, because their FF have hit a mature point in the upgrade cycles, and because they are already making MF sensors for Pentax/Hasselblad/Fuji.

Don't forget Sony also make the sensors for Phase one, all 150mp of the 54x40mm. I don't know if I fully agree with that 7 year loss, that's comparing a medium format camera to a 135mm one. If you compare the GFX to something like the H6D-50c or the Pentax 645z or the Phase One IQ250 (all the same sensor) you can see how the development of the other things that a camera great have moved on. But if you take it from a camera is a camera point of view then sure I can see that time difference.

Robert, I’m presently taking a restroom break in Thomasville, GA right this moment...on my way down to check out St Marks! I don’t have any bird gear yet, but hoping to get some landscapes there today.

When we come back for the camping trip I may have geared up for the birds in some way.

Robert is right about St. Marks/Panacea--lots of critters and regional specific landscape in the area.

I've been to the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab and Aquarium twice in the past few years, and they have some interesting stuff there--nurse sharks, sting rays, octopus, eels, and various smaller sea life. Worth a stop, as it won't be crowded and it is relatively compact in layout. I took these (eels, sea hare and conch), and more, last trip.

You're right. I just realized I was talking about body+lens on the GFX and body only for A7III.

I wish I'd have access to your prices, though. Here in Finland the two are available at €4699 (GFX) and €2349 (A7III), including tax (24% VAT).

Deleting my 500px account. I should have done it when they were sold to a Chinese firm. Now they were hacked in July 2018 but just recently realized it. Good grief.

Ouch 24%, Ireland is 'only' 23% Tax. €4499 for the GFX50r here, plus there is a little incentive to buy right now that I'm ignoring.

Cameras are basically computers these days and the performance limitations are a function of processing bottlenecks. Moore’s law applies to cameras just as they do computers and smartphones, and there are rapid improvements in the hardware until they reach a maturity point where improvements in hardware yield smaller performance gains and less of a value proposition for consumers.

FF cameras have hit that mature point, but MF cameras are facing that bottleneck right now because of the processing requirements that come with larger sensors and higher MP’s. But eventually MF will hit that maturity point too…sooner than later. Me personally, a $6k is a lot to spend when there are so many glaring areas such a camera could improve, and its bound to be obsolete 2 years down the road.

That's a no-brainer for me. Especially since you won't be cropping the images down any.

yap. l also love the more AF points. I'm not sure if there's a different in dynamic range.

If I crop, it's only a bit and the real estate don't need high res images.

two bodies...two bodies...two bodies...anyone shooting paid work that is not showing up with at least two bodies is not taking it seriously...the A73 would be fine for RE...plenty of resolution and DR. But to show up with only one is taking chances with your reputation. And it does happen...I had a shoot last fall that the r2 wasn't cooperating, it didn't want to focus...so grabbed the a9 and rocked on...had I only had one body...I would have been hosed. AS it was...client never knew it.

and then there is this...

for weddings i always have two full frame. for RE my backup is the A6000+Samyang 12mm

other option is

keep the 16-35F4, return the 1635GM and buy the A7iii = i have two FF and still have a 16-35.

what do you bros think?

I think 18mpx is enough for real estate...crop mode is a friend eh. Still have the 42 when you need it ???

then i'm going to need the 12-24 to get at least an 18mm equivalent at 12mm

I think its a big decision / change. If your a imagingpro member (think you are) then ask for a free evaluation of a A7iii and shoot something with the exact same shots / lenses i.e. keep the tripod in the same spot shoot all aspects the same then go to edit side by side and see / feel if your missing anything.

I think for your portrait work the extra pixels are important, but agree maybe not so much on the interiors. Exteriors are like landscapes and personally I like pixels again for that.

humble non pro opinion

Beautiful skies. Since the DJI drones use Sony sensors, I'm curious if you tried to open up the shadows of the mountains any?

500px is a mess. Good riddance. Their process to delete your account is interesting to say the least. Did you submit a ticket to delete your account?
