Cameras are basically computers these days and the performance limitations are a function of processing bottlenecks. Moore’s law applies to cameras just as they do computers and smartphones, and there are rapid improvements in the hardware until they reach a maturity point where improvements in hardware yield smaller performance gains and less of a value proposition for consumers.
FF cameras have hit that mature point, but MF cameras are facing that bottleneck right now because of the processing requirements that come with larger sensors and higher MP’s. But eventually MF will hit that maturity point too…sooner than later. Me personally, a $6k is a lot to spend when there are so many glaring areas such a camera could improve, and its bound to be obsolete 2 years down the road.
I agree with everything except for the notion that the GFX will be obsolete in 2 years. A statement like that carries a premise that everyone will always upgrade to the latest release and that the technological leap between from each release to the next significant rather than incremental.
I'm currently shooting with 5D3, A7rii and two Fujis (x100f and Xe-3). The only one of those younger than 2 years is the Xe-3, which pretty much X100F but with interchangeable lenses - i.e. technologically very 2016. And the 5D3 is about to turn 7. I fail to see how these things are obsolete.
