Cameras are basically computers these days and the performance limitations are a function of processing bottlenecks. Moore’s law applies to cameras just as they do computers and smartphones, and there are rapid improvements in the hardware until they reach a maturity point where improvements in hardware yield smaller performance gains and less of a value proposition for consumers.

FF cameras have hit that mature point, but MF cameras are facing that bottleneck right now because of the processing requirements that come with larger sensors and higher MP’s. But eventually MF will hit that maturity point too…sooner than later. Me personally, a $6k is a lot to spend when there are so many glaring areas such a camera could improve, and its bound to be obsolete 2 years down the road.

I agree with everything except for the notion that the GFX will be obsolete in 2 years. A statement like that carries a premise that everyone will always upgrade to the latest release and that the technological leap between from each release to the next significant rather than incremental.

I'm currently shooting with 5D3, A7rii and two Fujis (x100f and Xe-3). The only one of those younger than 2 years is the Xe-3, which pretty much X100F but with interchangeable lenses - i.e. technologically very 2016. And the 5D3 is about to turn 7. I fail to see how these things are obsolete.

I'm using a 27"imac. yah i know you can build a more powerful pc but I'm a mac user since MacPlus. It lives with me. :(

Ahh gotcha. I’m patiently waiting for the upgraded iMac release. Hopefully soon!

Beautiful skies. Since the DJI drones use Sony sensors, I'm curious if you tried to open up the shadows of the mountains any?

Thanks Gene, I actually lifted the shadows in the mountains in the final edit. In reality they were completely black to the eye since they were on the shadow side. I decided on this edit it was more in keeping with what I saw with only a slight shadow lift. I could have went the other way though and lifted it more

Thanks for the info. Bastian K recommended a pano kit that I'll look into as well.

That looks a whole lot more complex than I want to deal with...good for multi row I am sure.

Agree. On your PC-LR, do you just keep your RRS clamp on your ballhead? I noticed the PC-LR has a dovetail at the bottom to attach to a clamp.

"The PC-LR features a built-in dovetail base, allowing you to mount it onto any Really Right Stuff ballhead clamp. This allows using the ballhead itself to level the panning axis, thus eliminating the need for a leveling base in many applications."

For single row panos I’ve been eyeing an Arca Swiss P0. I like it because it’s an inverted ballhead so a separate panning clamp or leveling base is unnecessary. Seems like a max efficiency solution.

I think Charlie has one and likes it, if memory serves.

yes, I've got one, and I prefer it to the RRS PC-LR, which I've used, mainly due to weight.

I'm certain that the PC-LR weighs as much as the P0. That's not including the ballhead, my brother has one with and without the panning top, and it's just way too heavy. I'm still using the P0, it's earned itself lifetime membership among my gear, and I've used it for years now. So quick and efficient, fantastic for single row pano's, but you can forget about multi row. Great as a normal ballhead as well, the ring tightening is easily my favorite tightening/control system. The aspherical ball (anti flop), panning on top, tightening mechanism, just a great system overall, many happy years of lightweight pleasurable use. Surprisingly, it's survived some pretty horrific abuse, had it fall down many times, but one very bad in particular was sandy water, got sand all over the ring, which I thought would be certain death. Washed it, and worked with a little grinding at first, then worked itself out of the system somehow. Works like new again (beat up to hell).

highly recommended.

To your point earlier, it depends on how/what you shoot.

At this point for anyone shooting something that isn't completely static, there are some pretty glaring deficiencies that will have you wanting the newer version the minute it drops. The first iteration of the GFX bodies have a lot in common with the original a7r. The a7r is a perfectly capable body even by today’s standards, but very few people still shoot on them.

That said, MF market is different from FF so not a perfect analogy, but I personally wouldn't pull the trigger on one just yet because I think they will improve rather significantly in a short period of time.

I like the motion in the clouds and long exposure in the water. Just wish the buildings didn't lean back.

Thanks and might be a combination of distortion and angle I'm shooting at?

mine is the older version that does not have the dovetail on the bottom, mine is flat on the bottom and replaces the typical plate that you have for arca swiss...and I Leave it on all the time...I love it for shooting architecture, I set that first, and then my verticals are more accurate than trying to use the in camera level...its heavy, its not my long distance hike tripod so I don't care. hell, the bh-55 is a boat anchor but its solid as stone...no drift...
