I am on the fence about adding the R to my gear collection, my only holdback is will they announce a pro body in the next month or 2... If I buy the R now and then a newer body comes I'll be kicking myself, but I have been eyeing this camera since the release. I currently have a 5D4 and think this would compliment it nicely...

I can imagine how tricky it may be for a few other people regarding whether its the time to buy or not.

Honestly, the EOS R is so good, I could probably never care for another body if it had two card slots. It's so nice to use, I almost pondered getting another one, but kept reminding myself that if I add a 2nd mirrorless FF it probably should have two slots. I've got the 5DS with two cards, so I'm covered well for weddings or anything now. But I will be shooting a wedding in early March, and the EOS R will probably be used for 90% of the photos. I'll be duplicating some critical scenes with the 5DS too.

If you have the 5D4 already, I don't think it should be very painful to wait. I doubt the next pro EOS R will happen until between summer or into 2020. An earlier surprise would be awesome.

It seems harder to wait for a pro version now, seeing how exceptional the first EOS R functions with EF and RF lenses.

As for negative comments on Youtube about the multi function bar, I think that commentary is stupid. For some, the bar is useful. But the bar can even be ignored and the camera works great. That's not to say a more refined series of controlling can't be developed, but I find the body a joy to focus and shoot with. Complaints about the bar are really complaints about something that's like a FREEBIE that could have been omitted.

It's tricky until you finally buy one and use it for a few days. Then you wonder why you waited.

If this holds True then I would buy at release- I think Canon knows this is where they need to go or the pro market will not follow. It has to be on par with the A7iii or exceed this camera on specs.....I dont care how great the glass will be.

And it will be fantastic I'm sure. And cost twice as much and probably not ship until January 2020 at best, and I will have enjoyed my R for a year and sold it for a 30-35% loss. Enjoy the wait. :)

While shooting these family portraits, I used the R along side my 1DXII. I can honestly say the shooting experience was much better using the R. While I wish it had the joystick, the face detect makes framing the shot so much easier. Since I use off camera flash for my shots, I can't see the exposure before I take the shot, but being able to see the shot in the viewfinder as soon as the shot is complete is a big time saver, since I don't have to put the camera down to look at the back. I also made use of the flip out screen several times when I was standing on a rock, and had to reach way out to my left to frame the shot.

This last shot is from my 1DXII. Without looking at EXIF, I don't think you could tell which camera any of these shots came from.

First I've seen here with the head to head vs 1DXMKII.. That is good to hear and the portraits rock !

Thanks. I edited my original post to include 1 shot from my 1DXII. Hard to tell which camera was used based on just image quality.

Tim, I didn't even notice that and you are 95% correct.... I just love the look of the "pro" camera files now that you have tipped me off.:-):-):-)

That's a good point. If someone finds one on sale, used or even regular price, they may very well get get several hundred dollars worth of enjoyment from the EOS R body if they sell it to upgrade.

And any RF glass they buy is just glass in their gear bank.

One more image ... looking forward to shooting portraits outside again once the snow and rain mix moves on its way.

im going to do this right now with all my cameras.. using the same lens on all the FF cameras (135mm f2L) and the 85mm f1.8 for range equivalency on my 550d . with some lighting and all the good stuff. to see if you can pinpoint which image was shot with what camera. BRB
