I was a bit surprised that the EF 100 Macro IS L still hunts with the EOS R. It's the only L lens I've ever owned that hunts and sometimes can't lock focus. I thought it would be better on the EOS R, but it's not.

This is pretty rare under 'everyday use' but consistent for me with the 5D3, 5D4, 1DXii and EOS R, when shooting tabletop products on white. And it does not happen in the same scenario, with different lenses.

Anyone else noticed the 100L hunting? Maybe it's my lens...

Oh, and I do limit the focus range.

Mine does it sometimes on my 5D3 but I can't tell in what specific situations; never paid attention to it but now I will and will be happy to report back.

Mine does to(on 7d, 5dIII and 5dIV) but mostly when focussing very close and handholding so my tiny movements can change the plane of focus and it is constantly correcting(al least that's how I explained it) never noticed it when using as a normal lens.

Well, in my case it's probably my own fault: i forget to switch between 0.3m-0.5m; 0.5m-∞ and Full. But sometimes it still goes out of focus, so I hold the BBF and press the shutter button simultaneously. That works for me, though it's annoying at times.

I have the same issues with mine. Tried it with my 1DX2 the other day and it started to mess about. I find it very strange.

Shot number #2 is what we call Hibiscus, I did have many hibiscus plants but this years freak snowfall has killed them all:-( . Great set by the way, well done.

Thank you!

It's pretty minor. I Just thought I'd make sure it wasn't just my lens. I guess having all that focus range makes it a bit unique.

Mine does with 7D2, but I figure it is its nature with shooting close one moment and far later. Similar deal with my 150-600 sometimes.

Macro lens....astrophotography, I have to admit I wouldn't have thought to put the two together, but I'm glad you did. These are very fine photographs. Thank you for sharing.

Oh, and I do limit the focus range.

I had my EF 100 L do this on my 5D Mk III and I actually sent the lens to CPS because I thought there was a problem with it.
The CPS tech I spoke to on the telephone and I, could not figure out the problem over the phone before my sending it in.

Turns out the lens was just fine and I had "Lens drive when AF impossible" incorrectly set for the circumstances in which I was using it.
This option is located in the AF 4 tab on a 5D Mk III.
A forum member suggested the solution above to me, a few years ago.

Perhaps this setting may or may not help to resolve usability issues for others, or, I could be befuddled again......
