I have two 430EXIII-RT's so my question is, is it possible to optically fire one from the other? I want to have one flash off camera on a trigger and use that to optically fire the other. Possible?

I would be grateful for any help.

I don't own one of these so take this for what it is worth:

I considered purchasing these when first introduced. However, according to Canon's website (LINK (external link)) it states the following: "When used with a compatible flash, or flash driver mounted on camera, the Speedlite 430EX III-RT can serve as a receiver unit in an optical setup".

If I correctly understand what I am reading, no you cannot do as you describe in your question.

I may be wrong though.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to fire one optically when you can use the built-in radio trigger to fire it?

1Dx - 5DIII - 40D - Canon 24-70LII, 100L macro, 135L, 16-35L, 70-200 f4 and 100-400L lenses

- "Very good" is the enemy of "great." Sometimes we confuse the two.

Thanks for that you've confirmed my findings. I have a 6D and a 600D and the internal flash on the 600D will fire them as I want but I want to use the 6D which doesn't have an internal flash.

Thank You

I have 5 flash guns which I use for studio type work and some of them need to have triggers so I am trying to use them in some sort of combination to use 3 triggers (I have a forth which is on the camera 6D) to fire 5 flashes 3 of which are not 'RT' hoping that optical flash mode would do the job. The 430EXIII-RT's are a relatively new addition to my kit.

What other Flash guns do you have?
If Speedlites this may help.
I went through this in 2012 when Canon first released the RT System. I tried every possible combination of trying to integrate NON RT’s with RT’s.....smoothly. Optically does work.......sometimes. But I bought the RT for Radio Communication? No more Pocketwizards and cords to deal with. And I get E-TTL Radio.......
So after a month or so I traded in all of my non RT’s. 430 EX, 580 EX II for another 600 EX-RT.
You have a full frame camera with wonderful L lenses. Upgrade your Speedlites to the quality of your body and glass and the ST-E3 RT transmitter. My 5 600 EX-RT’s and 2 ST-E3 RT’s have been working smoothly since.

Thank you Nick5. That is terrific information. At least is isn't me not understanding the instruction manual! OK so I've just ordered the ST-E3-RT from Amazon. One of the other three flashes is a Sigma EF-530 DG Super which will always work on the Optical setting, so, I'm going to ditch the other two older ones and get another 430 EXIII-RT.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Instead of ditching the equipment you have you may want to consider the Pocket Wizards... They would very well and offer TTL if you want. I see that you have a 6D, you may have to check to see if you need to use the TT6 with that body. With my 6Dmkii I needed this for them to work.

You can consider just buying an eyeball. Like this one:

Thanks for the info. I'll only be ditching my two oldest flash guns. I'll keep the Yongnuo triggers but probably won't need them a lot in the future.

Had a look at this and have to admit that I've never seen them before. At about £15 a cheap and useful piece of kit to have. Thanks for pointing this out.
