I just noticed that POTN is now auto extracting camera body, lens and settings then displays them on each post.

I really appreciate this but I noticed some bugs with this feature.

It does not apply it to older images. :( I know this is CPU intensive process and can slow down the whole site if applied to all users at once. I was thinking that this could be done upon the active request of the user?

Next, the metadata feature does not recognize certain lenses. I know each photo editing app modifies the metadata to some extent and maybe we end users could help crowdsource the alternative lens names for correct ID?

I know this is added work but it would help the site further.

Example of no lens ID or no metadata at all

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1504961 uses a EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM +2x III @ 400mm

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1505344 uses a Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM @ 200mm

https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=17932579 no metadata displayed

https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=15734910 no metadata displayed

Maybe some day I'll do a crawler for old photo metadata. But at the moment I would keep it in newer photos and let users control it.

You can do the metadata re-check: edit the post and submit it (no changes needed). All images in post are re-checked.

Most likely +2x III messes up the correct lens decision. There is a lot of detective work done when exif data received does not offer a clear "hit". Focal lengths are sought for close matches in database etc.

I have a fix for +2x III and similar on my todo list.

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1505344 uses a Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM @ 200mm

Here the problem was that lensid is used by both Canon and Sigma, and for some reason Flickr exif block gives lens name "[X] EF 200MM F/2L IS USM". That X messes the search up. Lens names are so varied that we can not just ignore that X. The system knows that a 200mm focal length matches that Canon id only, but unless there is a convincing name match the lens is rejected (or added to suggested lenses list which you may encounter in some cases).

You can force a re-check as said above: edit the post (without any changes) and submit. I did that to the last two photos in your list and the metadata shows in full:
https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=17932579
https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=15734910

If for any reason metadata is wrong, just edit it for each photo as much as you like.

Thanks for the reply Pekka. Applying your suggestions now.

Could you correct the lens names of the

EF 24 f/1.4L II to Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM and

EF 24mm f/1.4L to Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM?
