I’m glare-phobic. It’s amazing how much glare there is to be cut out. When shooting water it’s such a satisfying thing to turn the CPL and be able to see right through the water.

Sometimes CPLs are a detriment, so I’ll either turn them till the effect goes away, or just remove the filter. When I shoot handheld at night, and need all the light I can get, the CPL comes off. During the day, though, always on.

BTW, I’m using B+W xs-pro kaesemann high-transmission CPLs to minimize loss of light for general purpose shooting.

I’m so OCD about them that I outfit every lens with its own B+W CPL to eliminate the hassle of putting on/off. Fortunately 52mm filters for the Loxias are not too expensive (except Breakthrough, which is absurdly expensive).

Breakthrough NDs have a superb reputation for color accuracy, so that’s why I got their NDs. Ridiculously expensive. Breakthrough have a 300 day return policy (if purchased directly from them), so they better be amaze-balls-great or I’m returning them for that cost.

I use a Lee square CPL when I use my filters for landscapes but generally don’t use screw on ones beyond that. I purchased a 82mm B+W kaeseman one when I ordered the 16-35GM but sent the lens back as it was defective and ended up with an unused filter

The Napa Valley is great for landscape photography! Best times are sunrise and sunset. Lots and lots of vineyards although they are currently barren. But you should be able to get some unique compositions. Weather permitting, there's hot air balloons rides if they're running

Weather is predicted to be in the 70's this weekend and the wild mustard is going crazy in the vineyards and fields right now.

From July of 2017; "For lunch, I had an egg salad sandwich made with chopped hard boiled eggs, real mayonnaise, a little deli mustard and chopped green olives on whole wheat bread. A pinch of salt and some freshly ground black pepper to finish."

Same here, and I even carry spare CPLs. Sadly, most of mine are 77, 72, and 67 mm so the investment was rather high.

very interesting...I rarely use a CPL...mainly around water, or when doing architecture...but outside of that...I barely use them...I ruined a whole morning of shooting once in Arches National Park by not realizing that the CPL was still on...back in my 5D2 days...and the rear screen was so bad on that camera that I couldn't really see the images as previews due to morning light...but a whole morning was ruined by awful CPL effects on the sky...

Adjusting my CPL is just another thing I do for every shot like setting my aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.

Some have the notion that CPLs increase contrast, and they certainly can, however think about thousands of little leaves in a shot all with glare. That’s actually a whole lot undesirable noisy contrast (imo)! A CPL can keep green leaves consistently mid-tone-green and not thousands of little white-hot-sun-glare-reflectors.

Great point, yes, when leaf texture and color is key, I will use one there too, fall color and spring color for example...

havent seen it in practice, but looks very promising.

It's one of the reasons I'm still flip flopping on osmo and gopro tbh.

osmo is just so good in low light, however I have my a7/9 in low light as well....

the majority of my video will likely be from the a7/9, however timewarp can really add to videos..... osmo is just great overall as a replacement to A7/9 video, wish I could just own both osmo and gopro

Leaves and water are the main culprits for sure! Can make a BIG difference to the image!

I discovered shooting the waterfalls last week (of which there are more to come btw lol) that I could do with a 6 stop filter. I didn't take the 10 because I didn't think I'd need it..... 3 stops and the cpl was giving me just under 1 second but there were a few shots I wanted to shoot at big apertures so I had to shoot for the scene and then shoot for the water flow - some blending to do. No biggie.

On the filter subject though.... There were a few scenes where I used a square grad after the cpl. Now, I'm pretty certain that was reducing the effect of the cpl..... Is that true? I didn't have the time (or all my equipment) to test.

I’m very tempted to purchase a GoPro after seeing this function on videos on YouTube. Will be using it for different purposes than my osmo though. I think the osmo has a better fov for shooting the kids etc as opposed to that GoPro look. I’m going to be getting back into hill climbing this year so want to start making videos with the drone, my camera and I’m thinking the GoPro mixed in, especially with time warp. I’m going to climb Kilimanjaro next year so will need a GoPro for that so reckon best buying now and getting use of it in my training.

Yes! I grew up on egg+olive. Nowadays no bread but it is great on a bed of lettuce. Poof won't touch any olive so more for me
