Hi, I have a problem in that the RAW files in folders show the icon instead of the thumbnail. Using a Canon EOS 700d mark ii on Windows 8.1 (64 bit).
I downloaded and installed the following Codec, "Update for Microsoft Camera Codec Pack for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2899189)" but it did not solve the problem.
Is there anyone that can give me the solution to this problem?
Thank you
Stephanus

Are you certain about this camera model?
Certainly windows should have the codec for the 2013 700D, (it's the same old 18MP sensor that was in about 15 different models) but I don't think that model has a "MkII"

Two serious problems...

1. Windows last Codec pack was for Windows 7 and didn’t have compatibility with the 7DII. In addition they no longer support Windows 7 or your Windows 8.1 so a path via Microsoft is likely a dead end.

2. Canon quit issuing Codec packs in 2012 and now recommends the use of DPP.

There are some 3rd party Codec viewers you might want to look at but they usually cost a few $$$.

Irfanview (external link) is free and might do the job.

Note that for Irfanview a plug-in is required for CR2 files. See https://www.irfanview.com/main_formats.htm and note the asterisk.

Plug-ins are found at https://www.irfanview.com/plugins.htm (you may have to copy then paste this and previous link; for some reason I can't paste from website)

As an alternative, give https://www.microsoft.com …oad/details.aspx?id=26829 (external link) a try. Even though it isn't listed for the 7DII, it is listed for the 7D but people say its works.

This, http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/ (external link) is also said to work, but is $10.

Yes, I had forgotten that I have plugins - I can even play MP3s on my copy!

The MS codec pack that you link to is for Windows 7, not Windows 8.1. The OP already installed the latest codec pack for 8.1 that includes support for the 7D. He'd probably just be spinning his wheels if he attempts to install the Windows 7 codec pack on a Windows 8.1 system. The third party route is the only solution to view the thumbnails in Windows explorer on a Windows 8.1 system. The FastPictureViewer codec is an easy and inexpensive option. Personally, I just use DPP or Adobe Bridge to view RAW files that aren't natively supported in the OS.

You could also try the free Fastone image viewer. Find it at https://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm (external link). Although I cannot speak for the 700D or 7D, it does works with RAW files from my 80D.

Canon 80D, 60D, Canon 10-22EFs, 15-85EFS IS, Sigma 100-400, Sigma 135/1.8ART, Sigma 30mm f/1.4DC, Canon 60mm EFs Macro, Rokinon 8mm fisheye, 550EX flash, Olympus TG6 underwater P&S
Postprocessing: DxOLabs 5, DxO Viewpoint 3, Paint Shop Pro 2021
Speak softly and carry a big zoom.

But thats not what a codec does. there are many, programs like Faststone that will read raw files, but using a Codec allows you to see the thumbnails in windows folder view, without having to launch any other programs.

I have read that a new MS codec pack is coming in the next W10 refresh, supported cameras are listed as well, but that doesn't help those using older versions.

Ive been using FastPictureViewer Codec Pack for years, and never had any issues with it not reading any camera ive owned. Well worth the $10 one off payment IMO.

AFAIK, MS doesn't release RAW image codecs for Windows 10 like they have in the past for earlier operating systems.

MS recently released a RAW image extension for Windows 10 that you can try if your system meets the system requirements (Windows 10 Preview Build 18323). It's still in beta. It uses the EXIF from the RAW file to display a thumbnails and metadata in Windows explorer. The .CR3 and .GPR formats aren't supported yet. It's good to see that there's some active development going on from MS.
