I guess I never clarified everything, as this was a year ago today. While I did spend some time on the shot, when I started, the bride was not back from the salon (they gave me a key to the room) and I had the rings, garter and flowers at my disposal. My second was also with me at the time because the groom had not arrived to his room yet. That being said, would I do this during a time when I didn't have time? Probably not. However, if I were doing more weddings, I'm sure I would set something up so I know I can make the photos happen a lot quicker.

High school rugby team photos in Northern California today. Very fast paced, mass production - 80+ players in 90 minutes, plus a few double/triples, and full team photos.

Bright sunlight, shooting HSS with a Profoto D2 and Westcott Rapidbox XL (36"). I actually would have preferred the 24" beauty dish for some nicer light falloff, but I had a handful of 2-person photos in the mix so I needed the slightly wider spread.

The Deets:
Canon 5DSR, 24-70mm@45mm, ISO 100, Aperture f4, Shutter 1/1250
Profoto D2 strobe on HSS, Power level 9-ish, Westcott Rapidbox XL w/2x diffusion

Lovely portrait. What do you use to power the D2?

Thanks. The poses were fairly plain/traditional but that's the only way to get through so many people in the timeframe.

For power, I have 3 options I use, depending on the situation. The first is 110v AC power. I carry a handful of extension cords so if there's an outlet around I do my best to find and use it. AC power lets me run the strobes at the fastest recharging rate and of course eliminates the issue of running out of juice.

For battery power, I sometimes use the Paul C. Buff Vagabond mini. I have 2, so I can run each strobe off their own pack. They work quite well overall. I've never had an issue with these, aside from not being able to shoot fast at higher power outputs. It can take 2-3 seconds for the strobe to charge and be ready to shoot again if I have them cranked up high.

I also built my own powerpack, very similar to the Profoto BatPak. It uses 2 SLA batteries (similar to small motorcycle batteries) wired to a quality pure sine-wave inverter. It offers me nearly unlimited power on-site to run the strobes plus laptops, ipad, etc. The downside of it is that it is very heavy and like the Vagabonds the strobe need to be set to a lower recharge rate so they take a few seconds until they're ready to fire again.

The battery-powered strobes are obviously very convenient but I really needed the higher power strobes (1000ws) for certain jobs and the battery powered ones that I liked max out at 500ws. Taking along a small battery pack and plugging it in really adds little to the weight or setup time and works well for my needs.

Impact 7' parabolic umbrella ... wasn't easy keeping the light off the background in that small room.

Wooo .... that's a huge umbrella, but it gave a very pleasant, soft lighting. I like it ! :-)

Nicely done. Beautiful lighting, and especially nice on the skin tones! One question: did you add a vignette in post? It seems like that large of light source would more evenly illuminate the full area and background.

Mike, your pictures are so amazing. What you are capturring and what SpaceX is doing blows my mind. That last image really brings out what 5 million pounds/2.3 million KG of thrust looks like. I can almost feel the energy from this image.
