Thank you very much Mark. There were actually quite a few juvenile black-crowned night-herons testing their wings and discovering the world around them. So I was able to get a good look at them. But I can sure see what you mean by mistaking this guy for a bittern.
Were these in a grassy / reed type of area? I've still not found any up here in the Portland area, but there was one about a year ago that was spotted (I never found 'em); The bitterns while difficult to spot, are easy to ID with the sound they make. Again nice work!
