Good questions.

You are limited in access at the majority of meets so you can not set up anywhere that you wish.

The stadiums are situated in the middle of campus/city. So, lots of background stuff. I have tried shooting more wide open but with the movement of athletes, I had fewer keepers. I have not tried it since moving to a 7D II.

That is a very distracting background. Shoot tight, crop tighter. The other people in the background merely detract from your subject. The long jump is well suited for portrait orientation.

Yes. They were taken at Cessna Stadium at Wichita State University though these are high school kids.

Love watching steeple. Always such an interesting event... here's one I snagged from the press box, on the other end of the track, while I was timing the meet. So it's not great for a lot of reasons, but I got lucky on the timing!

Trying to learn/get better.

This was a meet that allowed a bit more freedom for photos from different spots rather than just along the home straightaway. That helps.
